BOSE or not?

If you're replacing them to get a better sound the best thing you can do is, imho, change the head unit first.

Front speakers are 13cm/5.25" with 1" tweeters but the bass driver needs to be shallow so as not to foul the window. The factory speakers are riveted in so you'll either need to use those nasty plastic adapters or make up some MDF ones of your own.

Changed the head unit, does new wiring need to be done or is it all fairly plug and play?

Haven't done an A3 myself but as you've not got BOSE it should be fairly straight forward.

You'll have to clip the factory plugs and crimp on new connectors though.

Plastic adapters aren't the end of the world , they do the job .

Often as a kit an Autoleads - sak plastic adapters with a wiring harness will be plug and play .

What's the permitted mounting depth to clear the window ?
