Have a Golf 2010, 52k miles. Had the amber engine sign come on dash with occasional loss of power climbing hills. It was due its next long life service next month so I booked it in for a long life service today (£329) at my local VW Main dealer. Am told that the fault is the turbo and its going to need a new one at £1200, with the cost of the service on top of that! Can anyone advise me as to what I should do? I've agreed for them to order the part in overnight and the work will be carried out tomorrow, but I am really unhappy about the expense.

1, Is that about the going rate?
2, Should I just have the service done and get the turbo replaced elsewhere? (If they will let me having ordered it).
3, Should I chop the car in and find another Golf
4, Is this a common fault, is it likely to happen again?
5, Car has never missed a beat before now.

Any advice this evening would be most welcome. Thanks

    Any signs?

I.e smoke out the exhaust, whine noise on acceleration, oil loose.

52k is low for a turbo replacement, I think Vw warrant the turbos for 100k.
The only thing they will put it down to is wear and tear or neglect but I would still quiz the low mileage for a turbo fail and see if they will slash the cost to 50% .

Also you want a reason why it failed incase it happens again, it is also your right to ask for the old part back and this way you could have it inspected somewhere else.

The price is roughly spot on give and take a little extra for taking it main dealer.

In your car manual it will tell you how to run a car with a turbo, have a flick at it before you argue the toss with Vw so they don't blame you.

    For example;

    1. Start the car and let the engine idle with no accelerator for 30secs before moving off.

    2. When parked and turning engine off, again allow engine to idle without acceleration for 30secs and then turn the ignition off.

This is so the turbo never starves of oil.

That was a little head up incase Vw dub quiz you.

    Good luck

Result. Total bill came to £1279 including the long life service! I have put the episode down to bad luck, not seen much evidence anywhere that this is a common fault with the 1.4 Tsi engine. I did ask for the old part back, but I was told it goes back to factory for investigation, £197.91p was taken off the bill to reflect that. All in all £1279 out of pocked is just one of those things I guess.
