Hi - my mk4 Golf doesn't "know" when the tailgate is open. There used to be a luggage compartment open warning on the dash and a beep if the ignition was on when the tailgate opened but alas no more. The dealer said it was the boot latch switch but having had it replaced the fault remains. The pain is that when you open just the boot, after a few seconds the car locks itself and the alarm sometimes goes off. As the boot light works correctly I'm guessing a problem with the central locking control but would appreciate the advice of anyone with the same problem......

    Hello!

In response to your "tailgate open" problem, I know what the answer to the problem is! I currently have the same prob with my Golf. I'd paid to have the boot lock removed, cleaned and in the end exchanged altogether. Volkswagen, after hooking up the car to their computer, said the prob was with one of the onboard computers and it would need to be replaced at a cost of almost £200. However, this is not the problem! My alarm hasn't gone off now for weeks and I don't get the luggage compartment open message. Why? Because it's to do with the back windscreen wash! Anytime you use the spray to clean the back windscreen, water is leaking from the pipe into the vicinity of the boot lock. This most probably happened in winter as the pipe would've frozen and eventually split so that each time I use now it leaks. It works, but if you use the back windscreen wash facility it's gonna trigger the fault and set off the alarm. Simple! Should cost you about a tenner to put right, if you know a decent mechanic.

    Fantastic!

Cheers for that eshrules! Didn't know it was such a common problem! And being that I trusted my mechanic, I would've eneded up paying over £200 in total!

    Thanks again!

    Good morning guys!

Does anyone who owns a VW Golf find that their back break lights or sometimes the back lights seem to blow out very often?

    Please advise!

The same thing happened to me this morning! (Around 5am!) not the most popular person in my street right now. Thanks for this tip. Do you know if it is very easy to get at the pipe?

    Hey dude!

It's apparently quite easy! But don't use you're back windscreen wash until u fix it, or it's likely to go off again. If u click onto this link it'll show u how to fix it.

    Hope it works!
