Sorry this is a long post, but i thought I'd put them all here rather than opening several threads.

So, I recently bought an Audi A4 B5 1.9 TDi Avant 2000. I was some what worried since it has 206,000 miles on the clock, but it just had £200 worth of work to get it through an MOT (till may 17) and 4 new looking pirelli tyres, it's in all but perfect condition in and out, and runs and pulls very well, so for £600 I risked the high milage. It also does and average of 58 M PG

I got it home and had more of a good look at it and ran a Vag com and found some things.

1/ The first minor thing, does anybody know where to get the sound deadening foam from between the engine cover and engine? that stuffs disintergrating and going all over the place; rung Audi and they want £130 plus tax for the whole cover.

2/ I ran a vag com and cleared the codes and ran it again, the ones to come back where:

01274 - Air Flow Flap Positioning Motor (V71) 41-10 - Blocked or No Voltage - Intermittent.

01377 - Ultra Sonic Sensor for Alarm System; Left (G170) 27-00 - Implausible Signal
01378 - Ultra Sonic Sensor for Alarm System; Right (G171) 27-00 - Implausible Signal

Does any body know anything about those codes? The first one might be related to the next odd problem.

3/ When I had a look in the engine, I found a what looks like a Vacuum hose has been removed and blocked (see picture at the very bottom {don't know how to make it smaller, sorry})

What is this and what is it for? Part of me thinks the most sensible thing would be just to attach the hose, but then, why has it been unattached I wonder. Colud it be related to the vag error codes above? Or related to the Turbo or exhaust, I've never had a Deisel before.

I do know there isn't a belt to the AC comressor, my be it has somehting to do with that? Does anybody know how you can tell if the AC comprssor is working or does it have to go to a garage for that.

Like i say, everyhting works fine, the car drives fine, pulls find, good MOG and very few Vag com faults.

4/ Lastly (you'll be relieved to know), My old car was an Audi A4 B5 1.8 1996, just last may I put on all round new disc, brakes and brake pipes, if the discs are of the same size, can they be just swaped over, along with the pads?

    Thanks for your patients.

clean off all that sound proofing and forget about it. if you really want to you can buy soundproofing on ebay and make your own. that pipe is for the egr valve. you could re connect it if you want, but its probably a sign the egr is leaking so probs best left off for now. the air flow flap is for the heater i think. does it blow hot and cold. ?

    Thank you for your reply.

I've not noticed any problem with the heating, but I have only had it a few days and it being summer I've not really had it on.

Is this egr unimportant then and can be forgot about?

    is it this thing?

Your sig shows me not to worry about the milage though!!

    Thanks.

it looks like a pd engine from the photo. either way, keep the oil changed using the correct grade for a pd, if its a pd, 505.01 or 507, nothing else. and yes, mine is on 348,000 now, i must update it.. even my s4 has done 176,000, and both get thrashed more or less every drive. they are warmed up and cooled down every drive though, and get fresh oil when needed.

and yes, i would forget about the egr, although plugging it back in should do no harm, but less harm to the environment. i would actually plug it back in and if it makes no difference just leave it.

OK, I'll do that. Makes sense to give it a go.

Read up on it and it seems to say it's needed for smooth running, but this is running fine.

    Thanks.
