Hello all, recently purchased a 63 plate 3.0tdi black edition. There is an annoying 'whirring' sound coming from the front of the car that becomes slightly louder as you build speed. It sounds electro-mecanical in nature. Its not the turbo spooling as it is still audible with the car in neutral with engine idling and coasting. Becomes more noticeable over 50mph. Its not really loud, just loud enough to be annoying. Any clues greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. Will book it in with Audi dealer as its still under warranty. Took the car out again this afternoon to study the sound some more. It almost sounds like an electric motor whining away in the background. It has a certain oscillating quality about it. Starts to be heard at 42mph or more. at 80 or more its louder still. Its from the front end of the car, sounds like its in the engine bay but could be anywhere around the front. Wheel bearing? Tyre resonance? Just dont know. When I picked up the car there were 2 brand new conti sport contact on the rear and 2 partly used dunlop sportmaxx on the front. A few days after having the car I has these reversed so the new tyres are on the front. Maybe this is the cause as I dont remember hearing this noise when I brought the car home after buying it in Bolton. A 60 mile journey to where i live.

Only when the car is rolling? If so a wheel bearing faulty? Or does t happen when you accelerate with car stationary as well?

Hi, thanks for your reply. It only happens when the car is rolling at speeds over 40 or so. Its just a background oscillating high pitched whirring. Its not loud but its bothersome. I will have the wheels swapped back to where they were when i got the car, see if it helps.

Thanks for the replies, took the car in, OSF Wheel bearing was the cause. Fixed under warranty. Happy.

I have very recently begun to hear a similar noise. It is barely audiable when doing 40mph, by the time you reach 60mph you can definitely hear it. My car is not under warranty, I have 58 Audi A3 and I was wondering how much it would could to replace, I am guessing not a lot. I am perhaps more worried about how much Audi will charge to identify what the issue? Do they manage to find out the cause of the issue pretty quickly? I assume you took it to a main dealer?

    Thanks
    Simon

Simon, I took the car to a main dealer as it is still under warranty. They discovered the problem pretty quickly. I would presume they spun the wheels up with the car off the floor to discover a noisy wheel bearing on the off side front. The noise was audible in the car and would get progressively louder as the speed increased. Very high pitched sound very similar to an electric motor. Was just very annoying. I wouldnt think it too expensive if it is a wheel bearing. More costly would be their diagnosis. Hope you get it sorted.
