The tyres on my 2 year old S-line are almost down to the wear markers and with a holiday coming up when I shall be covering several miles I think it is time to fit new tyres .... but what sort ?

I would appreciate any views on which tyres any of you have fitted, why you fitted them and what you think of them.

Currently I have the factory fitted Bridgestone Turanza which have lasted for 18,700 miles but I notice that they are not amongst the best for fuel efficiency, grip or noise level. The best I have seen so far for these aspects is the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT MFS XL with a rating of C for fuel efficiency, A for grip and 68db for noise.

Incidentally this is the first car that I have owned where the rear tyres have worn more than the front tyres. Anyone else experienced this ?

    Thanks, Janner

Is it a Quattro? The split front/rear is more rear-biased which would explain it. If FWD I find it strange if the rear wore out first.

We now have RT2 as the BTCC kindly reminds us .

    New also and notable .

    Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3
    Michelin Pilot Sport 4

There is the new Continental Sport Contact 6 but I expect it to be like the 5 , a tremendous tyre test shoot out winner but in the long term wears out quickly.

I got 8K out of the fronts on my A4 quattro, Continential SC5.

Will be changing to Hankook S1 or Michelin PS4 whenever the rears wear down.

I ditched the Bridgestone Turanzas on mine after a few thousand miles-they were horrible! Fitted Michelin super sports and will be fitting PS3s soon when I change back to summers. Michelins are great in the wet but there are a lot of good tyres out there.

Mine came with Bridgestone Turanzas which didn't wear well, and replaced with Michelin Primacy 3s which I have found much better. Next tyres are Avon ZZ5s and are on my spare wheels ready to fit when Primacys wear out.

I'll report back when I've fitted the Avons.

Incidentally I got the Avons fitted for £87.90 per tyre but Audi quoted me over £200 per tyre!!

Another vote for the pzero's - I had them on my old s-line and and on the new FL - impressed by them doing over 20k miles out of each front pair. Some people say they are noisy, in my experience they are fine taking account of their size and how well they wear. On previous cars I've had most of the above brands and found that generally the more you pay, the better the product, with the exception of Bridgestone which I had on a Honda Accord and they were worn out in 10k...

I haven't looked at the spec on Avon's but I will. Where did you get them at that price ?

    My favourites
Good year, still had 6mm after 18ks, quiet and very good tyre for grip on all conditions
Dunlop sport maxx TT on my old golf gtd , 25ks+ In the fronts and grip was very good
Michelin PS3, good grip all round but not as quiet as the good year.
Bridgestone turanza were awful I thought. First few ks were good then after that apart from bone dry it was awful.

I wouldn't read too much into tyre reviews. They are testing a new set so it doesn't prove how good they are after a few ks or how long they last.
I've tried so many tyres and always found the premium brand had better longevity and continue to grip throughout the life of the tyre.
I've had some budget tyres on my old golf and they were good but didn't last. Toyos were good but got about 7-8ks on the fronts. So it's a bit false economy going for budgets.
I always go by don't skimp on tyres and brakes. These are the only things that need to work on a car 😉
