    Hi

I'm looking for advice and help if anyone can assist.

i have a 60 plate 2.0 tdi A6 avant with 31k on the clock. I noticed earlier after picking the kids up from school - 10 mins runtime total - that there was quite a bit of white odourless smoke coming from the exhausts. It came out just as I was 100 yards from the house. I checked the coolant level and it was fine and the oil cap and levels was fine. Oh and the fan was on for a couple of minutes after I parked up. I have run the car for a few minutes in the drive and there is no smoke. I am kinda wary of taking it out for a longer run in case it is serious - I know very little mechanically. And can't get it to a garage till next week.

Very much appreciated in advance for any advice given.

    Reece

10mins is not enough to fully warm the engine and exhaust system up. On cold mornings this will be condensation i.e stream esp if it's odourless and perfectly normal. White smoke that smells strongly of oil of diesel and which 'lingers around' in a cloud would be something to worry about.

    Appreciate the replies and advice.

I will give the car a longer run today. There's not a huge amount of smoke and the it disappears within 2 or 3 seconds. I've had the car for 5 years and I've never noticed it before. It is cold up here ...3 degrees daytime usually for the past month.

On a side note, the car averages 5k a year and most of its journeys are short.... 1.5 mile early in the morning and the same in the afternoon...3 mile a day. Weekends it may do 50 mile or so. Would these short journeys have an adverse effect on the car, is there something I should do like have it serviced on a more regular basis? It is often run almost straight away on freezing mornings.

    Thanks again guys.

Unfortunately that type of driving will kill any modern diesel as they have a lot of emissions control equipment which requires sustained high speed to keep them clean.
