Hi guys, wanting to do a gearbox oil change on the golf, it's a mk5 1.9 tdi 2007 match. Is it vw only stuff or is there an equivalent in the market?

VW stuff only, it's cheap enough from them plus knowing it's the absolutely correct oil for the box it makes sense getting it from them.

No don't be silly who do you think makes the oil for them.

It'll be either Fuchs or Castrol .

You don't get data sheets with genuine gearbox oil .

Go to VW direct and get the spec, the spec can & does change over time ........................................... you don't have to buy from them , but you may well be pleasantly surprised on the price. If its say £9 or £10 per litre from them, I would just buy it.

TPS or trade part specialist will be around the same price

Some VW gear oil is nearly as thin as water. After market oil, even with the correct spec is nothing like it.

Its just personal choice, but my skoda fabia was far easier to get into 2nd gear with upgraded specs.

Get the correct spec & then its personal choice

By the way, my VW dealer is really expensive for parts. I go to my Skoda dealer who accesses the same VAG computer to buy gearbox oil. Strange but true, however I am dealing with Arnold Clark who are notorious

So what is its viscosity at 40°C ?

I'm sure a company such as Fuchs would have the savy to match these genuine oils for viscosity very well as a recommendation.

If it's thin when cold you want I recommend...

I know this to be suitable for the vag 2.0 tdi 6 speeds and can't see a reason why a 1.9 Big Exploding Engine couldn't use it .
