I'm after some advice please for my A4 Tdi177 bhp s line black edition Quattro.

i changed the front tyres (continentals 255/35r19 96Y Conti Sport 3) at 14765 miles as they were close to needing change but we're getting increasing noisy and doing my head in.

The car has just been in for a service with my local Audi dealer at 18626 miles who advised the fronts were 3mm and 4mm, the shocking thing being this is just 3861 miles after they were fitted.

this equates to approximately 1mm of wear per 1000 miles which means the tyres will be shot very soon.

i took the car for a full geometry check and every corner was within the green zone.

Whilst the car was on the ramp the technician pointed out irregular wear on the inside edge of each rear tyre in that the wear pattern was wavy, normally related to broken shock absorbers.

The technician advised getting the vehicle checked before putting any new tyres on the vehicle as its probable the irregular wear would repeat itself.

So I took the car back to my local Audi garage, the Audi technician advised the wavy wear on the rear tyres on the a4 was normal, and usually worse with continental tyres, he then went on to say the high wear rate on the front was down to wrong tyre pressures or my driving style! Despite getting 14,765 out of my first set of front tyres.

I'm between a rock and a hard place, I am advised there is nothing technically wrong with the vehicle, the irregular tyre wear on the rear is normal and the front tyre wear is down to me.

has anybody else experienced my dilemma?

i need to change all four tyres soon, what brand and model would you recommend?

    many thanks

I'm using goodyear f1's and get a good 12000 plus out of them that's even wear all round. Apart from the front outside edge from hard cornering. I do drive it hard though and it's a remapped 3.0tdi.

Despite the Continental Sport Contact 5 12 tyre test 1st place wins , long-term ownership isn't good with poor wear and buy again .

The car had just over 3500 miles when I bought it, the tyres were and still are identical in brand and model. The new front tyres were a like for like change.

I wondered that, or may be a bad batch, but the process being that you have to buy some replacement tyres, send the problem tyres back to continental, they assess, probably deny everything, and if they do offer any goodwill it's based on the percentage of use you've had out of the tyres.

from my experience, taking on tyre companies, or even getting them to show an interest is tough, they just have too many excuses, sorry reasons, why its not their product at fault.....your driving style, tyre pressures, pot holes, the roads you drive on, the way you park.......

Has anyone tried the Dunlop Sport Maxx Gt on these 19in wheels. I'm having the same awful noise with my continentals and only 10,000miles out of them. Local tyre dealer has recommended the Dunlops
