    Hello,

i'm new to the forum but have been an active member on ukpassats forum. I know passats very well having owned a few.

I've just bought a b8 2008 a4 143bhp tdi with a symphony head unit with nothing in the glovebox and no aux in in the arm rest compartment. The Bluetooth 'Tel' button also says no phone installed so I'm guessing I have the most basic setup.

I have to say the head units for Audi is seriously complicated compared to VW which all have individual codes.

I was was going to install an adroid replacement head unit in my Passat something like this:

ES9405EU 8" HD Android 4.4.2 Car DVD GPS VW PASSAT GOLF TOURAN CADDY JETTA SEAT | eBay

is there anything similar for the b8?

basically I would like to have Bluetooth for phone and music, wifi internet capability for apps like google maps and sat nav which I can update.

Surely there eyre must be something similar for Audi? The forums I have read so far seem to be either people have spent a fortune to get things such as Bluetooth for phone or are lucky enough to have mmi installed?

Thank you! (Cracking car apart from this)

Ah thank you for the response. Interesting, particularly the first one as it looks like I can get android as an option on it. The second unit seems to have its own operating system which is no bad thing but I'm particularly looking for something with android.

Have you installed one of these? Anyone else got experience with them? Worth it?

No, i have not, did 3G retrofit(i had no other choice - "red" MMI screen), long time ago. Check audizine, there is few threads regarding touchscreen(china) one...people are moreless happy, as its not 1500+ pounds...

Huge thread in russian forum, winCe, andreoid etc...

By the reports, comments - its worth for that amount of money!

Was the 3G retrofit an involved job? On another forum they are saying it costs around £1500 to do in total?

    Was yours originally a concert?

    Hi,

I've installed new head units (Andriod, china specials) twice before. Mixed results. The quality of these china inc. units is very poor. The sound quality on both units was poor and the radio reception was terrible. To be fair one of the manufacturers did warn me about this Radio issue.

So if you like good quality or perhaps listening to the radio, I wouldn't recommend one.

On the other hand they both had excellent GPS and were packed full of features that the standard units didn't have. Maps can easily be downloaded form popular internet websites and 'drag n' dropped' onto the micro SD card. The second unit I had could connect to my phone wifi and google maps could be used.

Both units had appalling support for IPOD. Selecting a song is not possible on the IPOD/IPHONE and the on screen menus were unbearable. They also have no search functions, so using my 80GB old IPOD was not practical unless you want to spend hrs looking though alphabetical lists. Connecting via bluetooth was a must for I devices.

    Anyways, best of luck
    Hamsih

Thanks I think I'm going to have to stick to just wanting to have bluetooth installed for phone connectivity.

I've seen this which looks reasonable:

Infotainment Bluetooth Handsfree Kit Supply Fit - Genuine Audi

I'm not good with inside the cabin work so wouldn't to do this myself.

I'm hoping this will work with my basic setup.

I've also seen this one but don't think I meet the requirements:

Audi Fiscon Bluetooth Handsfree Kit Supply Fit

I have a fancy steering wheel with lots of buttons does this mean I have a MFSW?

    Have you made any progress?

Just another alternative which is the root I took. Forget an Android head unit. They all seem to be years behind phines/tablets and are generally extortionate.

In my last car, A Ford focus mkii, I installed a factory looking centre console build that held a nexus 7. This linked via Bluetooth to a head unit stored behind, within the centre dash. It used my phones hotspot for data. That meant I had music and all the capability of a decent tablet in the car. It looked great and worked really well. You would just need a way of switching back to phone to make your calls.

FYI I have just bought a B8 and am looking to do the same, though I may use a spare phone for the "head unit" but haven't decided yet. You might not believe it but I have the Chorus Stereo which is even more basic than yours, no aux, tel and no steering wheel controls.

I'm just starting the process so I'll keep you posted.
