My wifes car has an DSG gearbox. I understand that at 40000 miles the oil needs changing, instead of mileage is there an age limit for such a service? My wife bought her car last week, its just over 3 years old and has done 33000 miles. My wife only does about 2000 miles a year so she could drive the car for another 3 years before the car reaches 40000 miles. Is it recommended to get the DSG oil changed sooner than later??

    Hi
THe 1.6 engine is fitted with the 7 speed DSG and this transmission doesn't require any oil changes, it runs a dry clutch. Unfortunately this means that the clutch can wear out quite readily so beware of any judder or slippy gear changes.

My car has only done 11,00 miles. After its last service in December I asked about gearbox oil changes and I was told 40,000 or 4 years - which in my case means next service. Sounds sensible enough to me.

Thanks, didn't realise it was a dry clutch. I've been looking around various websites and the 7 speed gear box is causing some issues insofar as some dealers are saying that the oil needs changing at 40000 miles, other mechanics are saying it doesn't. From what i've read is part of the box is sealed for life so doesn't need an oil change, the other part of the box that contains the gears can have the oil replaced but is not listed as having a service interval so its up to the individual owner to decide if the oil needs changing or not.

    Hi
This is the transmission that gives trouble in hot climates because the synthetic tranmission fluid also immerses the transmission electrics and overheat releases corrosive and conductive substances. In hot climates like USA and Australia the fluid is replaced with mineral oil which does require periodic replacement. There's only a dry part and a wet part of the transmission. Synthetic fluid should be OK for life in moderate climates, as there's less deterioration with time. UK VAG dealerships are not replacing the transmission fluid in 1.4TSI DSG 7 speed Golf mk6's. I'd leave it alone.
