I've not had the misfortune to do this job yet. From what I can determine, it's behind the radiator and fans at the front of the engine. You'll need to drop the lower engine plastic tray, remove the bumper and put it into service position to access. Quite an interesting video here for C6 2.0TDi (A6) but not removing bumper. Looks like more hassle than it's worth. Removing bumper is straight-forward and gives you proper access. Starter Motor Replacement and Alternator Removal Audi A6 C4 - YouTube

Would have though you would be able to remove under tray and one of the front wheels and get to it through the corresponding wheel arch. It will sit either on left or right of engine at the seam between block and gearbox. Took me about an hour on a 1.9 Passat. No bumper off or anything. Just under tray and d/s wheel. Granted yours is the V6 but theoretically should be in a similar place? If not, ignore me.

Type your engine number into eBay and look at pictures, then you will see where it's at

Looking at pics, it's behind drivers side wheel arch. Same place as the 1.9s. Shouldn't be a huge issue to get out, probably a bit of wiggling to fit past driveshaft and suspension? On my 1.9 I had to unbolt AC compressor and rest it on a shoebox to give me room to pull starter out. Took me about 2 hours to remove it, rebuild it and put it back.

What you guys don't see in that picture is the engine mount, exhaust manifold and alternator are very, very close proximity and it will not come out unless you take the alternator out or engine mount and exhaust manifold. I do put the car in the service position but it can be done by taking the exhaust manifold off- too much trouble though ! Starter is quite a big motta and it needs a bit of room before being persuaded to come out ! The wires are short as well and the exciter plugs on late models is a pain in the proverbial to remove due to crud getting in...

That's fair enough. I have a gasaxe if that helps and at least you know where it is now.

    Good luck!
