    Hi,

Over Christmas my wife and I will be hopefully getting a new car. We have decided that we want to go for vw golf 1.6 TDI match model on a 12 or 62 plate. The reasons we have chose this model is because we still want the cheap £30 road tax, don't need a 2.0 late and don't want a bluemotion with the start stop technology on it.

I have read reviews on this car and the only concern I have is the EGR valve going faulty and it costing a bomb to replace after I have just spent 8-10 grand on the car. Do they really fail that often? I'm looking at a couple of cars at the mo and they all have 35 - 40k on the clock. What else do I need to look for on these cars? Are these cars reliable?

    Thanks for all replies

As you have discovered there is a known problem. It can be an expensive repair if you don't have warranty cover.

If your buying an 'approved used' from a VW dealer that has full VW service history and a warranty you should have some peace of mind.

We had ours fail when just out of warranty and 40k miles, VW paid 100% of the bill because of our full service history.

The replacement EGR units are apparently an improved part that should ensure future reliability.

I guess this improved part could be fitted from new on later cars but not sure how you could confirm if that is the case.

The other thing you can do is look for a car that has already had EGR replaced.

We do lots of them on Golf 6, 7 and Audi A1's, which are a real PITA! We have done some for other garages who have taken cars in PX with this problem and had a nasty shock at the costs involved. Our local TPS usually keeps three in stock and sell one or two per day.

So having been out today and test drove several cars I'm now confused!!! I'm torn between a 1.6 TDI match and a 1.6 TDI match bluemotion tech and unsure which one to buy! The bluemotion is a 12 plate with 39k on the clock, full vw service history, 12 months mot and good 24 month warranty on it. The non bluemotion has 28k on the clock, full VW service history, 12 months mot with only a 6 month warranty. Help!!! So the question is bluemotion or non bluemotion!

AFAIK the only difference between Bluemotion and Non is the addition of Start/Stop system.....personally I seriously dislike S/S, I find is so irritating and despite claims it doesn't make any noticeable real world difference to mpg.

Of course it can be turned off every time you start the car but having to do that is part of the dislike.

So if the cars are otherwise the same spec I would chose the the lower miles non Bluemotion car provided I could get the warranty extended.

The EGR units seem to fail anytime around 40k miles onward and you'd do well to have cover at the time. That said if you have and continue a perfect main dealer service history you would likely get a goodwill contribution from VW for replacing it.

Stop/start has driven me made since before a lot of you were even born or at least could drive. In 1980 VAG introduced Stop Start Automatic (SSA) on the Formel E Polo and on the Audi 80 (and you all thought this ECO crap was a new thing!) and on those it soon made people just turn it off as it was so irritating. My second ever customers partner had a 1981 Audi 80 1.6 LS with SSA and the thing went through batteries and starter motors like they were consumables. In those days it was a simple switch under the dash, now it is a default setting to encourage you to not switch it off.
