Apologies if this has been covered specifically but my MMI has died on my 2006 A6 Avant, having previously been drenched with water before I carried out a proper modification so it cannot happen again.
The MMI is completely dead, no illumination of controls, no screen, radio, nav or anything.
Fortunately I have VCDS and have run the Optical bus Diagnostic and it came back with the following:

    Saturday,17,October,2015,13:35:55:61478
    VCDS Version: Release 15.7.1 (x64)
    Control Module Part Number: 4F0 910 468 A
    Component and/or Version: Gateway H11 0070

    Optical Bus Diagnostic : Standard

    Controller Electrical Optical
    19-CAN Gateway OK OK
    07-Control Head(High/D3) OK OK
    0E-Media Player 1 OK OK
    77-Telephone OK OK
    47-Sound System OK OK
    56-Radio ERROR ERROR
    37-Navigation OK ERROR

This may be a stupid question but does the amplifier contain the radio tuner or is that done separately, so when it says '56-Radio' does that not mean the actual amplifier itself. Could the ERROR on the navigation be connected to the fact that the Radio/Amplifier has a problem or is that unrelated?

Any thoughts much appreciated, I don't want to throw too much money at it to get it going again. By the way it has the standard Amplifier and not the Bose one.

EDIT: I've just realised that the radio tuner is actually underneath the amplifier, sorry! Presumably 'Sound System' means amplifier??

    Many thanks.

Looks like the radio module is dead, so that will take out the MMI system, check the electrical connector & fuse, if that is OK then you need a new radio module.

    Hi
    I have a similar problem.
2006 A6 C6 Allroad 4.2 V8 LHD. I live in France, but have the system in English.

A couple of months ago my MMI stopped working.
I had changed the pollen filter a day or so before.
My wife was out in the car and turned off the MMI.
I went out the next day and it wouldn't work.
Never worked since except about two weeks after it had initially stopped, I was sitting waiting in a parking space for my wife to return to the car and the MMI suddenly kicked into life. It stopped again after about 10-15 mins.
I checked the VCDS and ran a disgnostic.

Optical Bus Diagnostic : 3dB Attenuation

    Controller Electrical Optical
    19-CAN Gateway OK OK
    07-Control Head(High/D3) OK OK
    0E-Media Player 1 OK OK
    47-Sound System OK ERROR
    56-Radio OK OK
    37-Navigation OK OK

This leads me to believe it is a bad optical connection, on the Sound System, that briefly aligned (giving me that 10-15 mins of MMI) and I don't know where to look.
I have an optical loop that I have tried onto the male optical cable in the back of the CD changer, but to no avail.
One question relating to this. When i do this (plug the MOST Male into a female loop), do I also have to put a male loop into the back of the CD changer so each fibre signal is looped and no open ends? I only did it with the incoming fibre. Maybe I do.
I don't need the CD changer.

Given the work I had done in changing the pollen filter which is behind the centre console, accessed from the footwell behind the glovebox, it is most likely that I may have dislodged or slightly knocked an optical cable on the "sound system" but I don't know where to look for this.
Anyone with good directions to where to look or photos if possible???.. it would be greatly appreciated as I am without sound, Sat Nav, reversing camera, etc. ever since. Also means no access to suspension adjustment, towing mode, jacking mode, etc.
I also tried changing the card for the control panel in the centre console but this made no difference so I put the original card back in after cleaning the connections and everything around it for dust.

Unrelated but may avoid needless replies...I have a new battery in the car. The old battery had had a few mornings of barely starting and I saw that could be an issue and chaged the battery anyway. Didn't solve the problem. And I don't have bluetooth.

    Thanks
    Niall

Niall, look at the amp in the boot. check the fuses.

If the amp is shot you can get a fibre bypass lead and change the radio coding to the internal amp to get you going.

    Hi Dan
    Thanks for the reply.
Is there a fuse on the amp itself or fuses somewhere on the left side? I think the amp is on the left side and the fuses on the right side. All the fuses on the right are ok. The 30A fuse i believe is for the Amp. I even tried taking that fuse out for a few days and no difference.
If it was the fuse it wouldn't have worked for the 10-15 mins two weeks later. Likewise if it was the amp it would surely have shown an electrical error rather than an optical error for the sound system?
I will try the bypass while looking in there and see if any difference.
    Thanks
    Niall

That would not even work on 3G as you would have to rewire the speakers, from the AMP to the Radio module.
