anyone here know how to recode ecus?
i have just had a mobile diagnosis with his vagcom come and recode the ecu. He was there for about an hour, he knew his stuff but he still failed. He said whenever he applied the new coding the ECU kept reverting back to automatic. Anyone heard of this?
The only other option is to get a ECU from a manual with the same part numbers and code them but is there a SKC or pin i should get from the new ecu first?

I don't know how old your car is but I'm sure I read somewhere that the security on earliest ECU's means they need to be removed from the car and a chip physically removed to recode it for engine remaps. Probably similar for other coding too????

I belive there is more than one place where you need to tell the car(coding) its manual now(abs, cluster etc). Usually if ecu does not support coding it should give "coding rejected" not jumping back - your friend has original cable? - As many pirat cables will not allow make harder coding changes.

Its for B6 tip to manual, but probably process is more-less the same:

    Module Recoding
3 modules need to be recoded from auto to manual: ECU, ABS and cluster. You cannot recode a module when it has a fault, therefore it would be best to recode BEFORE removing the transmission and TCU. At a minimum, you need the TCU and the gear selector switch installed. You'll need to recode the ABS module first, as it seems to find fault with everyone else, then the ECU, then the cluster. With no recoding, the ABS/ESP lights are on and non-functional, ECU and cluster throw codes for the missing TCU. With cluster and ECU recoded, the ABS module gets more angry and flashes the brake light. You can recode the cluster at any time. Without recoding the ECU, any wheel speed above 0 it sets idle to ~1300 or so. Without the clutch switch, a recoded ECU will not have cruise control.

It's a 2008 B8, I'm recoding the ecu as I just done the multitronic gearbox change. I had to strip out the ecu from inside the multitronic gearbox and leave it connected at without it the car would not turn over.
The issue I'm having is when the multitronic ecu is connected and it runs, blue smoke, 20mph limit and no power at all. Running out of ideas. What about ECU flashing?

You probably need to change parameters in engine ecu(new flash) not sure dealer will do this but try to be nice.

Audi Swansea said they'll recode it Friday so preying it works.........BUT would anyone have any ideas what could've caused the blue smoke? im assuming the 20mph top speed, no power and 'Gearbox malfunction - limited functionality' are just down to the ecu needing recoding but the blue smoke is still a mystery......
