If it was me, I would keep it as original specs.....DMF replaced with DMF, and live with it. I have heard of some gearboxes having a problem after the DMF was replaced with a solid Flywheel, but this is not to say that solid flywheel was the cause... could have been co-incidence. But I am sure that some one here will have personal experience of it, and enlighten us.

It's not really a bad design, it makes the car smoother to drive and the clutch is lighter. say it costs £1000.00 and lasts 100,000 miles thats penny a mile. Not bad considering you can ruin the 2.5k gearbox with a solid flywheel

They normally last a lot longer than that. look on the interweb for darkside developments they sell all the kit for SMF. I was going to put a solid flywheel on my car Skoda wanted 600 for the flywheel, the DMF kit was 2/3 of that

You can get a G60 flywheel off an ALH Caddy for 20 squids in a scrappy but there's other issues. Gearbox noise is one. The SMF is thinner so there's more pedal travel on the clutch. If you are a racy type the take-up is very rapid and the driving can feel harsh. BTW my prices are in yoyos or Euros

If I was planning to tow a caravan, I'd choose a solid flywheel. The DMF type can overheat quite easily as it does not have the heavy mass to absorb the heat.
The DMF is kinder to the transmission if the driver is a bit rough with take up / gear changes but for reliability the solid type wins hands down. What did we do before DMFs were available ? A lot of DMF failures are due to overheating due to clutch slipping at traffic stops. A lot of drivers do not use the handbrake as intended ( they can't all be automatics !).
