Hey guys, this is my first post..

I am intending on buying an a4 b5 1.9tdi Quattro..

But I am unsure as to if the engine changes in anyway through the years. Or which specs are better than others...

If any of you guys could withstand my lack of knowledge, your input would be really REALLY helpful..

    Thank you

Depends on what year you're buying! Up to about 2000 they had the AFN engine which is as good an engine as you can get IMO. They also had AVG engines near enough the same as the AFN. They had AJM and AVF engines (PD),there could be others

    Ok, thank you..

As I'm a new member I can't post in wanted section yet, but is there somewhere other than eBay to buy or swap audis?

I've always previously bought from dealerships so I'm new to sourcing cars online, I don't really have the foggiest..

When you buy from a dealer, even when you buy an older car you have rights and the car has to work properly unless the dealer tells you it needs something before you buy it. Buying a Quattro privately could be a bad idea if you're not sure what to look for.

I have a friend who knows pretty much everything there is to know with quattro, he has VAGCOM which he's been using for a while.. but he tends to stick to petrol, that's why I was asking about the different engine specs more than anything...

How much should I be expecting to pay for a decent one roughly? I know there are gems and s**t boxes but generally?

How much money do you have? LOL it totally depends on what the buyer will pay. Very low mileage ones are almost impossible to find and unless they have full audi service history the seller is probably lying. I think all the B5's are AFN engine standard 110 BHP but can be mapped towards 150 BHP with no other mods. Good for 250000 miles before a rebuild maybe more.

this is it, they are all old cars now. some nice low milers do pop up from time to time but people generally bought diesels back then because they could rack up mega miles for less money. i personally say you are better off with a real nice one body wise but with a dead engine, as its far easier to sort a engine out than paint. just look at plenty and when one pops up that suits your needs then buy it. price wise, early cheap ones fetch 500 quid, going upto 2-4 k for a really nice later b5.5 facelift. the b6 is the one people want though and these do attract a premium for nice examples.
Audi 80 tdi avant with 360,000 miles...

I am most interested in a nice shiny clean one looks wise..
When it comes to facelift or pre, I'm not too fussed as I'm looking to clean it up myself, e.g. lights, grilles, little tasteful lip spoiler, maybe s4 front bumper and some tidy black wheels.. I'm currently looking at a dark metallic blue one, but there's just something about the silver I like.. but I haven't come across a silver quattro anywhere.. not in b5 anyways..

I'm not overly keen on the b6, they're just about bit to frumpy and box looking with the standard cosmetics..

Feel free to correct me, but I'm guessing the 110s are PD110?

I think I should also point out, I'm expecting to pick one up with anywhere between 100 and 150k for under £1000... but it seems I'm being quite optimistic..

Also I'm not scared to travel a little way as I'm on the South coast, and have a trailer available to me.. so not to fussed about that..

The 110 is a VP ie it has a pump. You can fit bigger nozzles to the injectors, if your handy you can change the pump head to allow more fuel through, hybrid turbo also helps this engine. Actually the people at Kevlar stole the name "bulletproof" from the AFN. Zollaf's advice re a non runner is a good plan as the AFN was in many other cars that didn't have to work as hard as a Quattro
