    Hey Guy's
Just had my aunty drop around with a struggling car, she said she nearly ran out of fuel, then the "engine management" light came on (that is labelled as exhaust something")

Got it plugged in straight away pointing towards a misfire, possible fuelling issue, cleared the code going to change the fuel filter tomorrow put some injector cleaner through it and give it a good old thrape through the field see if it clears the system out.

    helen fault 1.jpg

that was the only code it threw at me so I was quite pleased.

Just In Case, anything else you guys reckon it could be?

injector, coilpack spark plug etc, I will probably change the sparks anyway just to be safe.

ok, guessing by the 67 views that no-one has come across this one before.
Right so today changed the fuel filter and added a bottle of wynn intensive injector cleaner to the tank.
fuel coming out the filter was BLACK

started her up and went for a test drive.

    It is rubbish

2k rev's put the foot to the floor and it stutters and wants to cough (like putting foot on floor at 800revs in 6th gear in a diesel)

I plan to change the spark plugs and do another diagnostic once I have the vehicle back.
Any idea's about this? very strange feels like it has no power...

You're asking for help with an engine problem but don't tell us what engine you're dealing with?

If the fuel coming out the filter was BLACK then I'd start by completely draining the tank and refuel with fresh fuel. I've never seen BLACK petrol before even on the dirty side of a filter.

    Jim.

A P0302 code there as well?, try moving coil pack 2 to another cylinder and seeing if fault moves with it. Dunno about black petrol coming out the filter though , sounds grim.

No, he didn't have a P0302, only P0300 (see his screen shot). What's special about cylinder 2?

Hi Guy's sorry for the delay.
cant believe I forgot to say which engine, it's the 1.4 petrol not sure on engine code but the fuel filter was under the car grr

    20150326_120704.jpg

yeah it was black (and note I managed to snap the stem like a meat fisted fool, spent an hour retrieving it from the attachment)

I am hoping that a good run with injector cleaner in the tank and a fresh filter will do the trick, getting it back in the morning though.

No, your right Rob. I do apologize. I don't know how I managed to miss that 302 code.
I thought you knew a secret about cyl2 there for a minute

    Jim.

No worries Jim, sure is black petrol coming out that filter, maybe he's got more problems than a coil pack.
Can the lines be blown through up to the injector manifold, from memory i think theres a schrader valve on the end of the manifold, maybe it could be backflushed from there back to the filter outlet pipe?

Yeah, that looks like some serious fuel contamination. It almost looks like engine oil is being sent back to the tank on the fuel return line off the pressure regulator. I can't think how the oil could be getting into the fuel though. I've seen it on diesel engines that have engine driven fuel pumps but I can't think of anywhere the fuel & oil come together on this engine. Surely that couldn't have been introduced to the tank from the petrol station.

I think I'd drain the tank and flush the fuel lines, supply & return, then fill it with fresh fuel and see if that cures the misfire. Either way, I'd be taking a fuel sample after a few weeks of driving to see if the fuel is turning black again in case it is a fault on the engine that's causing that to happen.
