I have noticed since buying a 26" LCD that watching a picture that is panning (such as following a ball) it pixelates to a point that sometimes I find it difficult to watch.

Not saying it is the best LCD telly but it is a Sony Bravia so it is not one of the worst either.

All that said it looks modern takes up less space so I would not swap it back. Besides don't watch much in the way of sports anyway apart from F1.

    It's a Mercedes Benzzzz though

Cant say I agree with everything you've said Chips. The critical point of an HD tv is to reduce the size of the pixels so increasing the definition. If you sit a top spec 1080 HD 32" LCD tv next to a CRT 32" tv you would at optimum viewing distance notice a difference if you watched carefully. You cant say that making a picture up of eg 10,000 pixels each measuring 0.1mm across would be better than the same size picture made up of 5,000 pixles measuring 0.2mm across. Its the same concept as the resolution on your computer monitor, you cant tell me you turn the resolution to the lowest setting to get a better picture?! And in most cases a PC monitor image is only analogue!

Certainly to get the very best from a HD tv it has to be top spec and set up correctly with all the right inputs and cables etc etc. If you dont have a high enough response time then you'll get blurring on high speed panning, just buying a Sony or Samsung over a Goodmans or Matsui wont cut it, its gotta be a top-of-the range or Chip will be correct & it will be rubbish.

But this is the original point of the thread, if you dont have a correctly set up system there's just no point in the 1st place!

I have a 32" Samsung. I have a HDMI cable from my PS3 to the telly.

For regular tv I have either Sky through a decent scart or digital via the telly itself.

I am just about to get Sky HD for the few channels that do output in HD.

Sky HD can only output in 720p, the PS3 in amongst others can output at 720p, 1080i and 1080p.

HD DVD's can output in 1080p

Film makers are still producing films in the lower spec HD. Even most PS3 games are only in 720p.

I went to a nice telly shop to watch the difference between the HD feeds. They showed me analogue, 576p, 720i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p and i could not see the difference between 720p and 1080p.

Whereas if you pop into Comet or Currys you will see a very poor setup showing off HD TV's and this would really confuse people who think that HD is supposed to be better. Their setup is generally so bad that ALL the HD TV's look poor.

Is it better at a analogue than a CRT, probably not, but I noticed a massive difference going from a Phillips 28" widescreen CRT
and a 32" Samsung LCD. Much clearer, more detail, brighter and it's lovely.

Some of this was down to the setup, you have to set these things up correctly otherwise they'll still look rubbish.

I have different setups for Blu-Ray, PS3 games, Freeview and Sky.

I used this forum: http://www.avforums.com to help set my telly up and also used it to get opinions on what it was like before I bought it.

hmmm, just noticed that this post is a bit loooooooooooooooong

    sorry

and having a 42" plasma at less than 3.6m is just a waste of money.

You are not going to be getting the best picture from that distance.

Also screen quality is everything, sure you can get a LG 50" plasma for £799 but is it really going to be better than a decent 1080p sony, phillips or samsung?
Thats usually full of old people or work vans tho

I wouldnt have a clue what size telly goes in what room as I haven'te even got one at the moment, it all a load of piffle anyway anythin i wanna look at other than on my standard pc screen gets hooked to the projector, its great for Wii
You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

I used to work for a certain Japanese company that produces, amongst other things, televisions. If you really and truly want to get the most out of your television purchase, do the following:

    1) Sit in the chair/couch/location where you will do the majority of your telly viewing.
    2) Measure the distance from the floor to your eye level WHILE SEATED.
    3) Measure the distance from you to where the set will be located. As TVs are (I presume) measured in diagonal inches, be sure that this measurement is in inches.

Now, for purchasing a widescreen (16:9 format) TV, divide the number of inches from you to the TV (step #3 above) by 3. That gives you the optimal screen size for your room.

The eye level measurement (step #2 above) tells you where the center of the screen ought to be located once it is mounted to the wall, or placed on its stand.

    ...

    Example:

While seated, you note that your eye level is 1.2m above the ground. You then measure from your fav chair to the wall where you're planning to mount your brilliant new purchase and you find that you sit 124 inches away. Dividing by three, you know that your best bet is to find an LCD that measures 42" diagonally.

Now you just need to get a proper HD signal running to the set and you're good to go.

(My couch sits approx. 12.5 feet - or 150 inches - from my TV. For optimal viewing, my TV ought to be ...50". It is, in fact, 46 inches. I bought it while living in a different location and it's not worth it - financially - to replace it at this time.)

    Hey hey hey.

A bigger telly is always better.

1080p is the ultimate at the moment but virtually nothing can utilise that resolution except maybe a media PC with a stonking beast of a graphics card.

Blu-ray maybe, but it is so, so expensive and also the Bluray vs HD-DVD battle has yet to be won, so little point in going for those formats as yet.

Out of interest, what resolution can the PS3 pump out ?

One thing I did as an interim measure was to get myself a good up-scaling DVD player which is capable with certain disks of producing a 1080i or equivalent picture.

But the picture is only part of the story, having a proper surround sound system really makes it for me.

As for in-appropriate use of mother and child spaces....

Just wait until you have kids yourself, your not bothered now, but when you have your own ankle biters, you'll get huffy and puffy when you see some norbet parked in one without kids.... mark my words, it will happen.

Anyway, this is such a hot topic amonst parents that Asda are going to start wheel clamping offenders. That quick sharp milk will probably have gone sour by the time the clamp is off.
