The steering seems to have gone lighter after I hit a kerb turning left. I wasn't going fast at all, in fact it was more like accelerating from stopped with the kerb a couple of feet away. Somehow as I mounted the kerb and back down around the corner, the steering wheel seemed to spin loosely. Dunno if anything got damaged. Any suggestions? CV boot joints gone? Tracking? Steering rack? Its not making any funny noises when I turn the steering wheel. Cheers.

Is it pulling in any direction? Does it veer in any direction if you accelerate from still with no hand on the steering wheel?

Its probably a good idea to whip off the front wheels & having a look at the steering rods & joints for any visual signs of damage before taking to a garage.

It doesnt seem to pull in any direction from still or moving so I guess its not the tracking?

I'll have a look at the steering rods and joints and report back.

    Cheers.

when your parked still, if you turn the wheels are both moving the same amount?? ie move it left inch and back right 2 inch?

If its doing the other i would of expected it to drag to one side..

if its still not doing it, sometime after doing something strange you "think" it feels different when its not.. if you know what i mean..

I know what you mean Rick! Tracking was checked to be ok. I've got an MOT coming up, if its the steering rods/rack, I'm sure they'll pick it up. I guess the best way to test for play in the steering rack is to switch off the power steering and move the wheels then. Its like when your wheel/tyre goes into a groove on the road, the steering wheel has a life of its own!

Does your car have Servotronic? That's the system that makes the steering light at low speeds and heavy at speeds (on the motorway) to reduce twitchyness.

If so, it may have been damaged / stuck in the full power assistance mode? Just a thought.

    Alex.
