    2008 passat 2.0 tdi cr dpf , cbab engine. Intermittent fault ( crank shaft position camshaft position correlation bank 1 sensor 'A'.. Had the car 6 month the fault flashes up once sometimes twice a week , it's always in the 1st few minutes of the 1st time I use the car on that day . And it goes off as quick as it comes on . The car drives as it always has . Had it 2 vw main dealer and said it could be any of the sensors listed on the fault , the 1st 1 that they said to change would be the camshaft sensor @ £400 ( £50 for the part, 2 to 4 hrs labour ( poss have to drop the gear box to get 2 it ) and vat) but they said it might not fix it ! Just ask 2 see if any 1 has had the same problem and what was the fix

    Your car doesn't need both sensors to start. That is why you are ok. A vcds log will give a clue to what is causing the fault. Pity the dealer don't know that. You can ignore it if you want and wait for the car to get harder to start.

    Hello Stephen. The fault code means the synchronization of the crank & cam sensors signals is out. It's often caused by the timing belt not being set up properly.
    Has the engine had a timing belt done is is it perhaps due? Either way, I think it would be worth checking the timing of the engine is set correctly before spending £400 replacing sensors.

    Jim.

    Ok thanks . Yes the timing belt was done 3 months b4 I got the car it's only done 40 k and only done about 6 k since the belt was changed . I did a bit of research on the Internet and that's what came back the timing . But the vw garage said if it was the timing the car would run as good as it does .

    The VW garage may be correct, but I think checking the timing really has to be the first step in diagnosing the fault. Taking a £400 guess certainly isn't.

    If I was going to be condemning a £400 part on your car, I'd want some evidence that the part was faulty. Maybe connect an oscilloscope to the sensor and run the engine from cold to see it there was some anomaly on the sensor signal from cold that disappeared as the engine warmed up. Then I would be OK with taking your £400. That's the sort of thing your dealer should be doing, not just taking a stab in the dark and hoping for the best.

    Jim.

    005. Start Conditions (last Engine Start) This data block is only useful if you suspect crankshaft or camshaft sensor faults)
    1. Engine Speed,(G28), Idle 800
    2. Start Injection Quantity, 7.0...19.0 mg/Str.
    3. Start Synchronisation
    The value is the Sum of the individual Values below.
    001 = Self Synchronisation Camshaft active
    002 = Self Synchronisation Crankshaft active
    004 = Engine running
    008 = Engine Synchronisation validated
    016 = Engine Synchronisation successful
    032 = Self Synchronisation Camshaft-Sensor successful
    064 = Self Synchronisation Crankshaft-Sensor successful
    128 = First valid Tooth recognized
    Most successful starts register as 255. (255 = 128 + 64 + 32 etc).
    A failure of crank or cam sensor will cause a total with one or more numbers missing.

    Why the dealer cannot check this for you I do not know.
