So, I was parked up yesterday and engaged the handbrake and switched off the car. All good. I started the car up again after a few minutes and put the car into reserve and moved off which also disengages the hankbrake as per usual. Then a 'Parking Brake Malfunction' warning popped up on the DIS. I stopped, tried engaging the handbrake and it wouldn't enage. The red light on top of the switch to engage the handbrake just flashed.

I stopped and started the car and everything looks good now. Any ideas what this could be as searching around most people have a permament problem (i.e handbrake does not engage again) but could not see anything where it only happened once (touch wood). Cars in for a service in a couple months so can get it scanned but wondering if anyone has similar issues?

    Ta,

Something similar has happened to me, but on each occasion, it has quickly resolved without intervention next time car has been run.
No fault codes apparent either! Keep fingers crossed that it is not a sign of impending doom!

I put a thread on recently with a similar issue where I get the same symptoms. Cycling the ignition clears the fault for a few months but i have a permanent ABS fault code on VCDS. The fault appears on the left side so I have switched the rear motors over to see if the fault goes to the right hand side. With my fault only one side engages and you can feel that in the way the car lurches to one side when applying the brake. Check out my thread.
    EPB fault..
I will update it when the fault comes back. I suspect it may be the EPB module in the boot.

Yeah, this is the first time it has happened I've owned the car (2 years). I'll see how it develops over the coming weeks.

Hmm, I didn't notice only one side engaging. I'll have to check this out now but the warning light only came on after I drove off and then handbrake wouldn't engage at all (no motor noise). Maybe these could be different issues. I'll keep an eye on your thread to see what your resolution was.

I've had the car scanned (with service) and there was a park brake electronic fault. I've been told the brake Caliper is the culprit and this will need to be changed. I'll wait for fault again and probably get this changed.

Be careful. My fault codes showed parking brake motor on the passenger side so i swapped the motors over(took 10 mins) and waited for it to happen again.
When it did happen again it was still on the passenger side and from what ive read it could be the button or parking brake module. I would strongly advise swapping the motors over to rule them out and stop you wasting cash on the wrong component.

Hmm, I'm guessing you still haven't got to the bottom of the issue. I don't have the tools to switch the motors. I don't plan on changing the caliper until it reoccurs. Think cost with labour is around £400 so not a cheap 'fix'

I think a motor(not full caliper) was around £200 and the module was around £220. I didnt pinpoint it just ruled out the motors. My clutch release bearing started screaming and rattling and the labour was 9 hours on the B8 as opposed to 3 hours on the previous B6/7 models so to change just the release bearing would have been risky given that the DMF and clutch are accessible with the gearbox out. The £1100 quote on top of the brake fault made me get rid of the car 2 weeks ago. The B8 has been very unreliable and i have gone back to a B7 which i had before.

The motor change is a 10 minute job and you dont need to change the whole caliper. Might be worth mentioning that when you talk to the garage again.
Good luck and i hope you get to the bottom of it first time.

Yeah, I'll mention it when back in. I'll update on here when issue is resolved (whenever that may be :-))
