    Hi Guys,

Basically im looking to buy a new car and was interested in the Audi A6 2.0 Multitronic saloon. Just wondered on what your opinions are of this car and what to look out for. My budget is around 6-6500. And i would expect around 100k on the clock (lower is of course a bonus)

Im upgrading from a 2005 VW Passat so not too clued up on Audis. Hoping someone here would assist me. Is this model one to stay away from or are they reliable?

    Thanks

Your budget may allow anything up to a 2008 model as per below:

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...l/a6?logcode=p

Search this forum for problems and ensure that the multitronic's had a fluid change every 40k miles as a minimum as HUGE £'s if it goes wrong.

    Good luck!

I think you need a large cup of coffee and the search button.....

However, as an owner of a 2007 Multi from new having covered 115k miles, here goes.

Cambelt and water pump change at 5 years or 75k miles. Some say 4 years or 60k.

Gearbox fluid changed by Audi or a competent Indy every 40k miles is a must. Walk, no run away if this has not been done or done late.

Check if it has a DPF. Not necessarily a problem but easier without. Do a search to find out how to tell. My 2007 car had one but it was not standard at that point.

This car has the BRE engine and therefore a weak oil pump hex drive shaft. It could fail and cost you between £1K and £2.5k if it takes the turbo and intercooler with it. More if the engine wasn't switched off quickly enough. Prioritise cars that have had this work done over those that have not.

Even though they're an auto, these do have a DMF. My slowly failing starter motor has caused mine to start knocking which will mean replacing both at a cost of £1k.

However, with this and the oil pump having been done I'm hoping to see 200k miles as I don't need another car yet - this one still does everything I need in comfort, style and economy. The engine sounds exactly as it did the day it was delivered over 7 years ago (never a smoothie but very willing) and I still love it. The car still has style in the world of ugly and aggressive 4x4s.

Buy on mechanical condition and history rather than shininess as you can cheaply sort out alloys and paintwork over time. And as this forum show, you can add any gadgets you want which are missing from the spec.

    Good luck!

thanks for the detailed reply. so are you saying its better to avoid DPF?

also regarding the BRE engine/ oil pump hex drive issue. What question would i ask a seller? Have the oil pump hex drive been replaced?

Sorry but as you can probably tell. Im a complete noob when it comes to cars, especially Audis. I would hold my hands up and say im after this car purely because i think is looks so good and im unaware of how good/bad it mechanically really is.

    Thanks once again

No, they will have a receipt with the cars VIN/REG and recorded mileage at the time the work being undertaken.

if no paperwork to prove don't take their word for it.

I've never had a DPF problem but then I've always used it for mixed town and motorway driving which means that the exhaust regularly gets up to temp to burn off the soot. It's just that if the car has a history of long periods at low speed in town it may not have been given the chance to regenerate.

Some have problems, most don't. If I had a choice between one with and one without I'd go without to be on the safe side. Chances are a 2007 BRE engine won't have one. I think you want one without the code 7GN on the spec sticker in the handbook. But check by searching the forum.

'7GN' signifying no DPF will also be on the sticker at the rear of the boot between spare and battery, in case there's no handbook. 7GG IIRC means it has one.

find a steep hill, put yer foot down, see if it goes into limp mode, if it does it may have egr, turbo issues. if it does , walk away or haggle on the price
