a vnt will boost from lower down the rev range. to convert from wastegte to vnt requires a controller as they need a vacuum to work.

To be honest im just simply curious. I have a 90BHP wastegate although chipped to 130BHP now. It kicks in around 1500RPM and it doesn't feel restricted or slower than any other 130BHP i've driven. Lad up the road from me has a 140 B6 Passat and aye there a bit of difference but it's not a mammoth difference, minimal to be honest. Cheers anyway!

my audi 80 has a chip and runs about 120 ish bhp. i can keep up with a 130 passat though. same thing with the turbo. i can get a good bit of black smoke out the back so i need more air, so a bigger turbo but larger intercooler first. you can get a fmic for a golf gti which should fit yours, and thats where i would start, then go for a turbo but stick with gated one, just a larger one. a vnt is a lot of bother to convert but you can still do good things with a normal one, they are just a bit more laggy. theres a boy over on landy net just fitted a t28 from a nissan pulsar to his 300 tdi. absolutely flies now, just can't get enough fuel in.

A VNT turbo is superior in every respect to a wastegated turbo and it will return better fuel economy, boost sooner and keep the power much, much longer up the rev range. The only disadvantage is they don't cope with high EGT too well. The VNT nozzle ring is in direct flow with the exhaust gases and it's easy to melt the turbine tips unless exotic alloys are used: inconel or titanium. This is the reason that there are only a few petrol cars fitted with VNT/VGT turbos, namely porsche gt2, Pagani, Koenigseg, etc. but they are very, very expensive due to high tech and materials implied...

Audi 80s are lovely wagons. New ones from 05 onwards look like a plastic box, horrible! Im not too bad with smoke, wee bit at times but again minimal. I had considered larger injectors but my tuner said it would be a waste of time and money and the car would be really smokey. He has suggested fitting a larger spooling wheel and re-housing it to my existing wastegate turbo. Cheers must keep that in mind with the fmic from GTI. I bet it does! Would love to see little boy racer in his type r 200 bhp civic when he goes out around him lol

thats just a wastegate for a turbo with no wastegate. this plumbs into the exhaust manifold and opens when max boost is reached instead of a wastegate. you fit a screamer pipe to it and its really loud. so no, great for a 400 bhp pulsar, no good on a golf diesel.
