2008 Passat Estate Tailgate exterior trim

Hi, I wonder if anyone knows how to remove the chrome exterior trim at the base of the tailgate of a 2008 estate? The bottom corner of the tailgate is rusting and I want to take the trim off so I can try to fix the paint.

Whats wrong with the paint?

The paint is flaking and has visible rust underneath it at the curved bottom corner of the tailgate. I bought the car a couple of months ago but failed to notice this. I'm afraid if it isn't attended to the rust will spread.. I want get the chrome trim off so I can see how far the rust has gone, and so I can maybe have a go at touching it up. If it's too bad I might need to get it done by a professional..
