    Hi
i am a newbie to this forum thanks in advance for all the suggestions

i have a vw sharan 2003 t red DI sport 115 BHP AUY engine with 230 K miles i recently purchased - i had a 98ford galaxy before 90bhp on which i was getting arount 40 MPG . this new sharan barely returns 30 MPG also having trouble at cold start - with white smoke ,also i noticed engine oil level was rising intermittently - if the car was parked in the garage overnight it starts well and pulls well ... i had the car scanned by a friend - Airflow sensor was faulty and was replaced ,also the injectors were checked they are ok according to my local mechanic . it had some limp mode problem which i think now resolved- current problems are cold start with white smoke for few minutes, rough ride for the first few minutes, engine oil level rising ,POOR MPG

can anyone shed light on this please

Post the results of a full auto scan here.

Unfortunately you can't compare a 98 Sharan 90bhp to an 03 Sharan 115bhp. Is your 30mpg dash indicated or manually calculated from brim to brim - how many miles have you covered since you've had it?

Two reasons for white smoke, one is condensation and is perfectly normal with cold(er) weather, the other is head gasket which may or may not tie in with the high oil level readings.

When are you checking your oil? The manual suggests, I think, checking 5/10 minutes after turning off the engine. Try it then, see if you get the same level reading. Post a photo of the dipstick if you like.

    Hi
    Thanks for your reply
recent scan showed only one fault which was bad maf sensor will try and do another one today and post it
oil level I did check them on different occasions some time after five minutes and some when it's cold it is on the top level .. Will post the current one with photo soon

mpg on the dash seems to show average of 34.5 but when I calculated manually it's around 65 miles for 10 litres of diesel ... Will post other info soon
    thanks for ur effort

To state the obvious, the only way the oil level would be rising was if something (usually water or diesel) was getting into the engine.

    Are you losing water?

Does the oil smell of diesel?

    Hi
Its definitely not water or coolant I can't confirm whether it's diesel - mechanic says oil doesn't seem to be contaminated .. He checked the injectors which appears fine can you suggest any way to confirm diesel in oil other than smelling ?

    thx

Dropping warm oil from the sump onto a piece of kitchen towel used to be the preferred method - I'm sure there's something far more spectacular now.

I have a 2003 Galaxy 115 Auto, same engine as the OP. Over 100,000 miles on the clock and averages 45+ mpg even on short journeys. White smoke can be water or turbo, I have seen turbos cause this many times. One of the problems on the PD engine turbo can be stuck vanes. The other source of white smoke can also be from the booster heater when the burner needs cleaning, look underneath in front of the nearside rear wheel you will see the mall exhaust pipe there, ours had problem and it was a real smoke screen behind for quite some tie.
