I'm thinking of changing my 245 40 18 wheels to 225 50 17. Would the 17's be an ok fit?

The reason for the change is to reduce road noise and improve comfort.

Yes that's fine just double check the size for 17' on the pressure chart inside the fuel filler flap.

The official 17 inch tyre size for the A6 is 245 45. My calculations suggest if I go for the 225 50 the diameter of the wheel inc. tyre will be 1cm smaller than it currently is with the standard 18's.

No...A6 C6 is definitely 245 40 18 as standard tyre size for 18 inch rims...... the 17s will be fine....
EDIT...misread post....17s have TWO possible sizes....see the photo below!
    Apologies

Hi there, my A6 came with 225 50 17's as standard and they were fine, no issues, just did what they were supposed to do.

I've since upgraded to 19's running 255 35 19 and love the look, ok so I've sacrificed a little comfort but on SE suspension its still all good.

You will be absolutely fine with 225 50 17 just be sure to double check the offset as that will play a huge part in how the wheel sits in the wheel well

    Good luck

Having just sold my A6, I happen to have a set of 17" TT wheels in mint condition with a nearly new set of Pirelli's on them that I was going to stick on ebay soon if you are interested? Sizes and offsets are all fine for the A6.

    17" size on my 2006 is 225/50/17 98 XL.

This is shown on the pressure chart on the fuel cap, as well.

Could anybody advise please, what the rim data for the original 17 inch wheels were (I presume 8J, and ET?) that is standard on the SE facelift C6? I am also looking to downgrade mine 18 inch to 17 for the purpose of winter tyres. My 18" are 8J, and ET48. When I am looking for 17 inch, should I try to match the ET48, or more likely the ET of the original 17 inch wheels?

Does anybody have a feel of how much the difference is in fuel consumption between running 245/40x18 vs the 225/50x17? The look of the 18" audi wheels are so much nicer, so wonder if I should stick to 18" for winter tyres as well...

Many thanks and sorry for so many questions!

ETs can vary, do a search for neilos100 as he fitted smaller wheels to his facelift.
