"Speed sensor" should show up on diagnostics which they would've performed first.
Ask for your VAS diagnostic's printout -- you've paid for it, it's your property

You gave them the AA's diagnosis, presumably telling them that's what you wanted
them to do. But they went and did something else...

A B6 engine can still run when a speed sensor fails, unlike previous models. Sounds like only the fuel pump was faulty.

And that's proof that they over-charged you. You want all charges associated with the unnecessary changing of speed sensor back.
Did you pay by credit card? If so, advise your card company immediately. Meantime write to the relevent named director, advising of what's happened, and what you require in terms of re-imbursement. Tell them that "this is an open letter and you reserve the right to produce it if proceedings are necessary".

Also in the letter say you are asking the AA to nominate an independent technician to confirm their original diagnosis, and failing re-payment of the £x you've paid for the unnecessary speed sensor change, will get that report at a further cost to them. You also want the old speed sensor back for evaluation. That's your property too

Don't let them get away with it!
