Hmm.....yes, I’ve wondered about a breaker bar. I guess it’s the combination of the swivel end and the long arm which is supposed to be so effective. But the typical length of 600mm seems a bit short for good leverage. But then again, anything longer would probably not get in there - my 4ft scaffold pole certainly won’t - oh, for a hydraulic lift.........

Exactly, my scaffolding pole won't fit and I'm sick of it scratching my socket set or my spanners so problem solved and yes I can't convince the other half to let my dig a pit in the drive either! The breaker bar is good you just need to maneuver in it sometimes and also to jack car up as far as you can with you jack sometimes I've put a block of wood under my axle stand and then jacket it again with another block of wood on jack :-) railway sleepers work wonders. Don't trust those little drive on ramps heard too many horror story's of them collapsing.

Has anyone tried the extra jack trick? I have used it in the past

Put the bar over the head of the bolt with the end a jacks height from the ground

Put the jack in this gap and start to pump

I have found the that works in confined spaces and in most cars has provided constant torque which gets the bold started

Done that too but paranoid of it slipping off as can't keep hand on the end of the bolt.

Ah, got it. Remembered a tip someone suggested - put the wheel on full lock. Tried it, and hey presto, plenty of room to get the scaffold pole on. Slackened one of the caliper carrier bolts easily, just as a trial. Bit short of space in the garage though, so waiting for a dry spell.......
