If the crankshaft is really broken you need to fit a good secondhand engine. That will be cheaper than a proper repair to yours. Even so you can expect a bill of £2000 or more.

DMF vibration probably caused it or simply some slag iron in the part.

Yes zolaf, and it's a few months out of warranty. Not that the warranty was worth the paper it was written on of course.
DSG4 lost drive, rolled to a stop, sounds like a bag of spanners. no prior symptoms.. First thoughts were DMF but that appears ok , garage say broken crank.
Looking like leasing a Sportage for peace of mind, had enough of vw, financially it's been a disaster
Question is what to do with a lovely SE in perfect nick ...... apart from the engine ?

wow, that really is very bad luck. now, are we certain its a broken crank ? if so, one end of it won't be spinning and the engine would sound worse than a bag of spanners. is the engine out of the car ?

Yep, I want see that for myself too. Told them to leave it till after Xmas then will pop over for a look. I want to see the break.
Replacement crank is £250 - 300. But if the crank has broke there could be lots of other damage (unseen) done too.
The AA said DMF when he heard it. The first mechanic said DMF when he heard it But after further inspection he could rotate the crank a few degrees freely without turning the engine. Assuming there should be zero free play it has to be a broke crank - does it Not?

what was he turning a few degrees ? front pulley maybe ? could be that broken, they do fail, a lot more often than you hear of a broken crank. its not unheard of, my brother broke on in a vauxhall viva in about 1980, hit about 15,000 rpm and went bang. thats the only one i have ever seen myself and i was only 6 at the time.
