White smoke diesel smell at cold start up mk4 golf 1.9tdi 130

Hi there,
My wife's mk4 golf 1.9 tdi 130 seems to have a issue on initial cold start up.

This issue only appears on first start up. Start the car up (allowing the glow plug light to go out) there is a cloud of white smoke from the exhaust for about 3-4 seconds, then it clears. This smoke smells of diesel, on initial start up the engine seems to run rough then clears. Later start ups the same day the car seems fine.

I've scanned for codes but no codes found.
My wife has commented on how much it smells of diesel when she initially drives the car.
We have only had the car a couple of months but we have only noticed this issue over the last month, it was like this before the cold weather started.

I appreciate that it is not a new car but this is not quite right, the cars engine performance is strong and mpg on a run is the early 50's.

I was wondering if this was a leaking injector seal or glow plugs(however no fault code for faulty glow plugs). Reading in another recent post with a very similar issue, one reply mentioned a boost pipe issue, looking through the paper work for the car it shows it has had at least one replaced possibly two over the service history.

The he car is a 03 model with 130k on the clock
Any ideas would be appreciated

White smoke and diesel smell usually means overfuelling. I'd check injector seals they won't show up as a fault code

either that or you have a glow plug out.

I've not done any more with the car however I'm going to have a go with replacing the glow plugs seeing that when the temp is over 10degrees to does not seem to do it so fingers crossed it is the glow plugs and not anything else.
