    Hello All,

    Ive been dealing with a problem with my Bora for a while now. It had its MOT in June and since then has had a problem that at first was intermittant but now happens on every journey.

    The car drives perfectrly from the get go but as soon as the temperature gauge hits between 70-80C I start getting a few judders then eventually its continuously juddering, it doenst really go into limp mode as I can still accelerate right upto motorway speeds it just judders like hell between 1000 and 2000 rpm.

    No dash warning lights and after driving for a few minutes like this all I have to do is turn the engine off and back on and it returns to normal no matter how long the journey is so it doesnt reoccur for that journey unless I switch the engine off and let it cool for long enough.

    I connected a diagnostic tool and I get two error codes 18074 and 01314.

    Ive followed various guides Ive found online so Ive cleaned the EGR and MAF but the problem still occurs.

    Ive read it could be a wiring loom but some have also said not all engine code types have the wiring loom. Ive included a picture of the engine without the cover on.

    Can anyone point me in the right direction of how I can resolve this?

    As a note Ive not had a full service for a long time (given that VW charged upto £450 for a full service) but its not had any problems other than this, cam belt was change a short time ago and also the clutch. (glow plugs havent been changed) I get no smoke other than normal emissions and once its running after the first engine off and back on it runs like it has no problems at all.

    Any help appreciated!!

    Thanks.

    01314 - Ross-Tech Wiki - Your fault depends on what text is included with the code

    18074/P1666 - Ross-Tech Wiki - The solutions are there and tally up with your issues.

    Cleaning the MAF should always be avoided, replacing is the best option.

    Ideally you should be servicing the car every 12mo/1 year. If you want it to last, it needs to be properly maintained.

    There are ways of servicing that don't involve using VW - where are you based?

    01314 - No actual text as it just gives me the error number.
    18074 - I had seen that and the problem being is I don't know where to locate most of that and the Haynes manual's diagrams are too grainy to be of any use to me...I have seen a few forum posts on others stating that replacing the loom fixed it but I cant see it on my engine...

    Im based in Warrington but havent found anyone who does the same level of full service (replacing appropriate parts etc). I wouldnt take it back to VW as the last time I did they cross threaded the sump and had to replace it then didnt do that properly so it ended up costing me over £800 in total the car is worth maybe £800 now given its mileage (193,500).

    The wiring harness is a weak point as you'd have seen from your searching. You already know the wiring to cylinder one is failing or has failed.

    You don't mention an engine code but there are a few posts on here that will assist;

    Question Replace injector loom in 2002 Golf TDi -ATD Engine Code - PD Engine ?

    For a Passat but the process is similar - https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?8359-Injector-Loom-(01-Pass-130TDi)-anyone-done

    As for Indies around the Warrington area, both BVR Automotive and Awesome GTI are forum sponsors - you'll find their details in the Sponsor link in my signature.

    Failing that, have a look/search through this area of the forum > Reviews & Recommendations of Dealers, Independant Garages & Breakers Sponsored by Volks Auto

    Annoyingly enough I have two pictures of the engine (one enclosed on the first post) and both show the label that has the code on but I cant make it out so will have to have a look again. It looks like it is most likely the loom that needs replacing I just dont know which part (number etc.) or where its actually located....

    Once you know the engine code, the rest is easy enough to work out.

    As for where it is;

    Injector wiring loom help info and photos

    ...again it's a Passat.

    Ah thanks..didnt realise I would need to take the top off the engine block to get to it...why would they design an engine with wiring inside? Looks like I could get a fair bit wrong doing that.....

    If you've already got a Haynes, you're halfway there.

    Remove the rocker cover bolts, remove the timing belt cover and then waggle the rocker cover loose.

    If you don't feel confident get in touch with a few independents to get an idea on the costs involved.

    Right engine code is ATD. I had a good look around it and I think the difficult part would be getting the cam cover off..(looks like tiny fingers are needed) and the rocker cover is about 8 bolts...

    *edit*
    So does this look like the right part?

    Looks like the right part, the numbers match but it's always best to double check before purchasing - never trust the word of an internet nerd

    According to the internet, the left rear rocker cover bolt is a PITA to access. I do know that the belt cover is held on with two clips either side, a long flathead screwdriver should be sufficient.

    Might be wise to replace the rocker gasket too, depending on where you buy it from you may be told you have to buy a new rocker cover. The gasket can be purchased on its own though.
