On Saturday my car failed to start , all I heard was very tiny clunk sitting in drivers chair with all windows up no music or fan going.

On the fourth cycle of key she started , no long crank, no noises other than normal operational sounds.

There was no dimming of dash or any cut out of MMI for the failed 3 starts, battery is showing 12.1v/80% SOC in VCDS, NO DTC's in VCDS ...

On Sunday my car failed to start , same info as above but car started on second cycle of key.

Today no such issues, is my starter motor going to fail?

After a good summer with no issues (finally!) is my winter of woe on me again! ...

I really do hate my car! ...

It is the biggest pile of poo! ...

Yes sounds like starter, a friend who had* a 2001 Mondeo, the starter started failing and clunked randomly and be morning it kept clunking and wouldn't start. New starter and new battery sorted it.

*had as in the engine swallowed its intake flap things and threw a conrod out of the engine

It sounds like the main contacts on the pull in solenoid maybe on there way out.

You would have to see if the solenoid feed wire was being energised when you turn the key.

If so, then if not a loose connection or bad ground then its the starter.

Cheer's Chris for info, exchange starter motor cheapest I can find for a 3.0 TDi V6 is £252 + deposit = £300 . Audi dealer is coming in cheaper , my fear is the flipping thing is gonna give up the ghost right when I need it the most!

Cheer's Dan for info, I only did an oil change a week ish ago and as my car is such a delightfully reliable A6 (NOT!) I checked everything like connections of things, any leaks, etc , etc whilst underneath it. I believe it is an energising issue as for the rest of the day all is well.
Ahh well I really can't wait till the day comes she leaves me or perhaps I should consider getting her crushed! ...

Before you do anything measure the voltage on the battery.

Whilst cranking over as if this drops to below 9.6v the battery just may need a recharge, how long has it been on the car?

You could have drained it when working on the car .

I just got new battery in Jan 13, Bosch one 110Ah had also a very new manufacturer date stamp, it is coded correctly to battery regulation module.

My wife laugh at me each time I put the car on maintenance charging when any car we've ever owned in 17 years has never had it done and we drive this the same as others.

I also feel my neighbours must think can't that **** next door afford a new battery when I'm recharging it!

And don't ask how many new parts this car has had in 2yrs of me owning it, I got it with 70K on the clock only recently touched 88K ish ...

If I took out the retrofits and accessories I have spent in excess of £4.5K on parts/maintenance ...

But I will check battery with multimeter and when cranking occurring tomorrow for first start of the day, so far fault only occur on first start of the day ...

That's when it has been stood over night and can lose its charge if it has a dead cell. Check it out..if it is no good then claim on its warranty but check charging voltage too
