I've been with Three now for just over 2 years, on The One plan. I travel a lot around the UK, up and down the motorways, no real issues. Yes, 3G isn't everywhere, but it's in the places that matter.

I'll be staying with them for a while yet, and I want to see how their 4G network turns out. Unlimited data on 4G? Yes please!

And don't forget it'll be at no extra cost!

Can't wait for their roll out. May jump back on the iPhone 5s if its true they'll have a 128Gb version. This nexus 4 is great but a Max of 16Gb is crippling.

Yea, I'm on a 32Gb, but I tend to use iCloud/Dropbox/GoogleDrive a lot, as I get 12Mbit when I'm tethering in work. It's pretty epic to be honest. It's like 3.75G

BT and O2 are 2 totally separate companies

O2 is owned by Telefonica (Spanish)

But O2 have struck a deal where they are going to share cell towers with Vodafone now that Vodafone have their own Ground Based Network (the cables that link all the towers together and back to the internet etc)

I'm considering losing my landline altogether (dire 1.6mbps in my area), and going with 3 on an unlimited plan. Apparently they allow tethering. Any pitfalls to this? I don't do a great deal of downloading, but occasionally the kids stream films off love film.

On the assumption that the 3 signal will give you better than the 1.6mbps you get on your landline then here are a few thoughts.

Get a proper 3G router. These exist and allow you to either fit your SIM inside or plug your dongle into them. The household just sees this just like it saw the ADSL line before hand.

Then there is congestion on an 3G connection, you will notice it much more than on an ADSL line. There WILL be times when the connection slows right down if the local mast gets busy. Just a fact of life I'm afraid

Latency will tend to be higher (usually) so for things like IP voice and online gaming, this might be a problem for you.

But generally, you should be fine.

Probably best to try it for a few weeks (perhaps with a PAYG SIM) to see if it really works for you before you ditch the landline

When I lived in Edinburgh, I was in a flat share where we didn't want to get a landline connection as we didn't know how long we would be in the flat for. I opted for keeping my Vodafone mobile and getting 3's mobile broadband with a 15Gb a month allowance while my flatmate got a 3 contract mobile with unlimited 3g bandwidth. We were in a good 3g area so we got decent speeds of between 3 and 5 Mb each. He used his for netflix with minimal buffering and even used it with his company home working kit. I got the plan with a plug in modem but soon bought a second hand MiFi unit that I still have running now. My contract ends this month and I won't be renewing but that is because I don't use it more than it's not good. I would definitely recommend them as long as you have a good signal, otherwise don't bother.

It changed my opinion of 3 as I thought they were rubbish before. 1 word of warning is that customer services are dire and offshore call centers.

Thank you, some food for thought there. I did not really want to go down the road of dongles/Mifi the data allowance is capped where tethering the phone is not, however it would be attractive to have it all work like it does now. If I go for it, I will trial it first like you suggest edit, this was directed to @Mark. I also appreciate your input hejikibob!
