  1. Worsening Mechanical Noise from Clutch Housing When Depressing Clutch Pedal.
    #1
    uncleron Guest
My car is a 2008 A4 Avant 170 S-Line Quattro with 80K miles & still on original & trouble free clutch and over the last few months I have started to hear more & more noise when depressing the clutch pedal - the noise is only there between the first 2 to 4 inches of pedal travel. There is a lot of mechanical / bearing / grating noise coming from the back of the engine / clutch housing now with the pedal at this point - With the clutch pedal in any other position 'silence' !

It sound akin to a worn clutch release bearing as you can hear it rotating - If I take my foot of the clutch pedal or it’s fully depressed, then I can’t hear it.

I know the original clutch release bearings were re-designed and there are known issues with Dual Mass flywheels and clutch judder etc but on doing a search on this specific clutch noise I have I struggled to find many people suffering from the same symtoms I have which feels unusual - I can't be alone in this I'm thinking.....

Anyone else suffered from similar symptoms ?

    Cheers!

I'm surprised you haven't found many people suffering from the same problem as it is very common.

It will be your DMF as you and Chris have suggested.

Search DMF on this forum e.g. Cost of replacement clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel (2.0TDI)

You are looking at about £1,000 I'm afraid.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

I did see that the DMF's were an issue - I was just not sure that the noises I am getting with the clutch pedal in the specific initial 4" of travel were definitely related to the DMF's......

I did have a suspicion - Just wanted to check I wasn't missing anything else it could be I suppose.

I am curious where you guys can get a clutch and flywheel fitted for £1000?.

An Audi flywheel is best part of £800
    clutch think was around £300
    labour 300- 500 depending garage.

If you are confident in the workshop, its a lot easier than you think and you can buy a complete DMF & Clutch for under £500, shop around.....Its a big saving if you are willing to get your hands grubby

You can get equivalent parts without the audi logo on (I believe they are all made by bosch) for a lot less than the audi branded prices.

It seems you can make some big savings shopping around.
So Audi uses Luk for its flywheel, anyone know who Audi use for the clutch kit?
