    Hi Guys,

My car has developed what I can only describe as a breathy howl (like someone blowing through their hands to make an owl sound) as the turbo comes onto boost at about 2krpm+. It comes from the left hand side of the engine as I sit in the driver's seat. The intercooler was replaced a year ago after it split but the sound was totally different when that failed. I suspect a turbo pipe has delaminated or split.

Is there a common site of failure that I should check first? 2.0 PD TDi BRE.

    Thanks!
    H

the easiest way is to have good look to charge pressure pipes. make sure they allright. or get some local garage to do a smoke test to confirm split hose. and if they all ok it could your turbo. have you notice any lack of power and black smoke???

Thanks kamil86, it sounds like the noise is coming from the left side (looking forward from driver's seat) hence why I suspect intercooler and pipes but most of the pipework is down the front left of the car and inaccessible; the turbo is on the other side. What I can see looks fine and feels fine but I haven't had anyone rev it yet while I've got my head under the bonnet listening. Of course it cold be turbo noise translated through the charge pipes making it osund like the problem is on the other side? It certainly doesn't sound like a bearing at all.

yes it can. you have only 3 rubber hoses. one from turbo(if remowe airbox then you can see it and check) to metal pipe which go across whole front. and short one from metal to intercooler(bit hard to check) and manifold flap to intercoolr (easy access to check). but one from turbo is the one is more likely to crack. or. it could be intercooler again.

Thanks Gup, you have a PM.

Sop far no black smoke or reduction in performance. Possibly there is a bit more lag... but hard to say and I can't recreate the noise at standstill which makes it very hard to diagnose.

Check you inbox ... you have VCDS? I would assume a MVB check for say air mass or charge air would show discrepancy?

You maybe able to gain access/view parts of hoses/intercooler by folding back wheel liner ...

If you do wanna remove bumper cover to gain further access there is a "How to..." I did in that section of forum ...

you can see most of what you need to by taking off engine vanity cover and fog light grills.

Sounds like a pipe problem (check hard metal pipe union to intercooler pipe along front bumper edge. Also check inlet manifold to intercooler pipe Thats easy). when pulling the hoses there should be minimal play.

If you had a boost leak, the car would have performance issues /under/overboost etc.

Sure it's not a vacuum pipe thats perished????

thanks Josh, I hadn't even thought about a vacuum pipe. the reason I thought turbo or charge pipes is that the noise is definitely linked to the boost from the turbo not just revs but I don't have performance issues. Would that relate to a vacuum pipe? Sorry for my ignorance but would I look for the vacuum pipes

No errors from VCDS but I haven't checked any MVBs...
