    Hi Guys,

I am just about to buy a newish A6 avant 2.0tdi S -line very well spec'd and comes with 19" alloys and was wondering what is the fuel comsumption like on these models /
I have now read quite a few reports of being much lower than stated.
My current A4 avant 2.0tdi B7 SE is excellent of fuel, and always gives me aroung 45mpg average - so between 40ish local and 48-50 on a run.

Are these models as good as stated ? Has anyone got one and would be happy to share their experiences of them ?

Any information would be greatfully recieved

    Thanks

You do not say if you are going for a manual or Multitronic. Most of the criticism about the consumption has been with the Multitronic version. I have a 2.0 SE Avant and usually get 42mpg+, my total average over 10000 miles is about 42mpg and a fair bit of that has been short journeys so a different driving pattern should see that go up. It is also very noticeable how the consumption is affected by the air temperature - during the cold winter months it was 2-3mpg lower. You will not get the claimed mileage figures as these are lab based and do not reflect reality (not least they are conducted with an air temp of 20-30c which here in the UK means the best days of summer and the car is already at operating temperature so the time spent accelerating when the engine is cold is ignored and that can have a dramatic effect on the consumption.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I'm only looking for a multitronic version, as the wife will be mainly using the car and will not go back to a manual.
The reason I wanted a 2.0tdi 177ps was because of it's stunning mpg figures stated ? But this clearly is not the case, will having the upgraded 19" alloys also effect the economy ? Interesting enough - my brother in law had choose the 19" option on his new 320 BMW and says he's mpg figures are 10 mpg less than his work colleague exact same car with standard 18" wheels ?

I would be happy if the cars can return around 40 - 45 mpg for most day driving around town etc.
Are you happy the the overall car & consumption received ?

You won't get those figures driving around town in my opinion. More like mid to high 30s from experience. On a good run you'll perhaps hit mid 40s in a Multitronic.

The "problem" with the Multitronic is that is will select a lower effective ratio when you accelerate and this will impact fuel consumption, although you will reach your desired speed faster, than is the case in the manual where the driver will often either let the torque do the work or simply let the car take longer to get to the desired speed. My car is a manual but I am getting the same fuel consumption that I had with my previous C6 TDie Avant and this engine has over 25% more power, so I am happy with the outcome. I cannot comment on the impact of wheel size as I both cars had the standard 17" wheels, however with bigger (and most importantly wider) wheels you can expect more drag and with it lower fuel consumption.

For the size of the car, performance - the MPG you get is good - the BMW 5 series (2.0 Tdi) get about the same MPG in real life, as do cars such as the Ford Mondeo, etc.

The Gov MPG is the MPG you can get under lab conditions - specific temp, no air con, etc. and is conducted on a rolling road. The idea being that since all cars use the same test conditions, you can assess the relative efficiencies of different cars - or thats the theory anyway.

A few friends have the 5 series BMW - one has the estate and the other a saloon - both are seeing 42 ish MPG average - which leads me to believe that this MPG is likely to be the 'technology limit' of what is possible in real life for the size of car the A6 is with the performance levels if offers.....

Example. 180 miles today. Beautiful weather. M5 clear as a bell, 70-80mph indicated, A roads to the coast averaged around 50-55mph. I even checked my tyre pressures before leaving.

40.3mpg total. Not in "sport", not with the AC set at 1 degree, not with all the windows open and a trailer. Didn't even have the sunroof open today (which I did think could be causing a drag when my figures are so bad).

However, if I went anywhere near a town centre (which is what the OP asked) "I would be happy if the cars can return around 40 - 45 mpg for most day driving around town etc." you could drop that easily to mid to late 30s. In my car. In this weather. With my foot.

The marketing of the Multitronic's attainable figures are hyped beyond belief compared to the manual's. But we've all been over this in another thread. I'm just glad the OP asked.

Thank you for the reply, you have the exact model that I'm thinking of buying, and mid to high 40's is good enough for me, please could you tell me if you had to do a few thousand miles first before getting better mileage ?
I took one out for a quick test drive yesterday and liked the drive, set up & cabin:-)
Are you happy with your car overall ?
    Thanks
