Fault code reader

Hi

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced fault code reader that is compatible with a 98 1.9tdi 110? I know this predates the 2004 memorandum on diesels which most code readers have in their blurb but I am correct in thinking the B5's were fitted with OBD2. This would this make it compatible with a code reader??

this reads all vag stuff and 90% of non vag stuff.
it will even reset the service lights on my 96 A4 1.9TDi 110

the VAG cars around the 96 onwards had there own setup not OBD2 but its the same style port some code readers will read them some wont you are better getting one that states VAG

you do get some cheaper ones but I can highly recommend the above.

Alternative is a cable from Gendan or the likes (~£20) and VCDSLite from rosstech (free). The free version will give various fault codes, clear historic codes and reset airbag warnings and provides a useful upgrade path if you find the need for more of the software features.

This setup is what I used for my '99 1.9 tdi and also works on my '04 B6. Don't be tempted by eBay knock-off cables - it's just not worth it.
