I've noticed that for a large percentage of time TMC is showing as unavailable i.e. there is a diagonal line through TMC. Is this normal?

Yep, it varies by area and reception to the radio station providing the tmc signal

Was hoping not to have to stick the TomTom in the car but if TMC is not reliable then I might just have to.

Didn't someone else have this problem and it turned out to be a faulty aerial? Or am I (are you ready for this) getting my wires crossed? Ha.

I had the problem where the TMC was permanently crossed out. After several days in the workshop (where a new aerial was considered) a simple hard reset solved the issue. Don't ask me how to do a hard reset mind.

I suspect some of the VCDS people might know, but this may also be a different problem I suppose.

I've done a "soft reset" as per 31 of the instruction book. It is still intermittent but I'm getting a signal more often. The real test will be next week when I'll be doing a 800+ mile business trip. That will take me to a lot of different areas that should have strong signals.

I often have TMC crossed out, but the system worked brilliantly in Paris, telling me there was an accident 100m in front and 100m later there it was.

TMC was almost non-existent on my journey down the A1 from Haddington to around Morpeth when it made a return. Later in the day I was going from Sunderland to Knutsford and it appeared to be there more often then not but was totally useless with a full closure of the A1(M)!!! It was showing congestion and gave details of "6 miles of stationary traffic" but did not re-route me. I attempted my own re-route and planned to get back on the A1(M) at junction 47 after the closure but it eventually took me in to another long queue of traffic that was trying to avoid the closure.

This is the first time I've owned a car with TMC and my experience so far is that it is as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. Looks like the TomTom will defiantly be accompanying me on long journeys in the future. :what:

TMC is never going to be as good as TomTom Live as that takes it feed from not only the static roadside devices but also the feedback of actual traffic speeds from thousands of vehicles who are signed up to the service. Would have expected that those with 3G+ and Google Maps in their car should be getting a similar service to TomTom Live. I would still question whether your TMC is working properly as (admittedly in the M25 area) I get both good connectivity and also reasonable information and rerouting on the roads that are covered by the TMC service. As a matter of interest you should see what sort of reception you get for Classic FM as they are (still I believe) the carrier for the TMC service in the UK. If you are geting bad reception on that station then that will be the root cause of the problem
