the dowel is in 2 parts, the inner peg is about 4mm dia and just pushes out towards the door skin, the outer will then come out easily, the inner may take some finding inside the door!

Screw a self tapping screw in the middle and pull the dowel out with molegrips/pliers.

They are only about 50p at the dealer. A small screw driver or two are your friends if you can't find a suitably sized screw. Putting them in is harder! Don't drop it on refitting.

Reviving this one because I've just had to take a back door apart.
The dowels in question are both of the split type, and I found I could fit a pair of fine/needle nosed pliers directly on them and out they came.
A bit of wd40 probably helped. Doing it this way also means you can stick a drill bit or thin screwdriver through the dowels to reduce the risk of dropping them.
I was expecting a right battle after watching a bloke on YouTube struggle with the screw/bolt method. Think he was using a screw that expanded them too much.
When reinstalling, make sure the glass is seated correctly on the carrier, not behind it, and that the holes are lined up exactly.
As mentioned before, a spare set of dowels is a good idea

Just did mine last week as had the doors stuck shut due to a faulty lock mechanism!!

I took a flat head srew driver roughly the same size as the inner dowel and pushed it through. Did not need a lot of force. When putting it back together put the 2 pcs in, centralized them and simply slid the window on top of where they go and gave the window a gentle push and it snapped in place.
