Well this one has stumped everyone....

Over the last few months my Passat's Esp light has flickerd, split second loss of power and a sensation like when a HGV passes you on the motorway. It happens when you reach 60 mph.. Its fine at 50, 55, 65, 70 etc..

It has been in several garages and no codes found....

I have checked bulbs, tyes all new.

I have had two new cv joints, bearings replaced and brake peddle switch replaced around the same time when esp light started to flash.

Also notice traveling up the M1 a couple of nights ago, when the problem occurs I can see the head lights flicker as well..

    Any ideas...

Have already tried that one. It only happens when driving in a straight line.

loss of power may well be the egr valve and totally unrelated to the light flashing ????

Thank you again for your reply.. I had the egr value replaced six months ago... What a difference that made.. Like a new car!!! Something is tricking the esp into action. I have felt it do its job in the wet and snow etc... So I know it works ok... But why is it activated for a split second on a straight road at 60mph.. Apart from that the car goes like a rocket!!!

you know whats what then and what the egr stutter is and how the esp feels ... the only other thing I can think of would maybe be an abs sensor on the front sitting proud of its housing , give them a tap or two with a rubber mallet etc .....

Probably bits of rust dislodged while the work was carried out, they stick to the magnetic tips of the ABS sensors & cause this type of problem. Remove & clean them.

    Hi there,

I am wondering if you have found fix for the ESP light flickering issue....

I have a VW Passat 2005 (Petrol) which I bought from a local dealer last year. It has recently started giving me trouble...First Alternator was gone while I was driving on Motorway....I only had few warning saying Alternator Workshop on dashboard (during same journey), anyway alternator was replaced with new one but alternator workshop message still appeared on my dashboard few time since then. Also ESP lights are flickering with loss of power (accelerator pedal sounds differently), its happening while driving on slow speed even....sometime ESP light stays on dashboard for longer period but does not cause any power loss issue....Though its all scary...I have booked my car at VW approved dealer to diagnose the problem next week...Hope there wouldn't be any bigger surprise....

Problem solved.... ABS sensors was slightly out of line.... Due to work on CV joints and bearing replacement.. This was giving a weak signal at 60 mph... Marvellous... Who needs computers and codes.. Bah!
