My remote locking hasn't worked since I've had the car,
new batteries and countless attempts to reprogram keys
hasnt worked, I know the ccm has been flooded in the past
but have no water ingress probs now. I can unlock via drivers door
lock and lock/unlock via tailgate with key, central locks all work.
no other faults associated with ccm are present. The ccm controller
    is unresponsive in vcds.

I just noticed several adverts for universal remote central locking kits
and am considering this as a fix rather than tracking down an expensive ccm
which has to be coded and may or may not work.

Are there any good reasons why not to use such a kit (assuming its of good quality)?
do you think fitting would be easy enough for a half competent diyer?,

    any other thoughts?

Thanks!, Seems you can get ones for any car (key blanks supplied too).

This is what I was looking at, Seems like it'd be just as easy using this to replace/work around broken remote locking as to install
    on a car without it.

Also seems it'd be a cheaper overall fix even to buy this and have my (very good) local auto electrics wizard fit it than replace one or two
control modules and/or faulty wiring in the car.

I'm not concerned about originality with this car (2001 1.9tdi avant), just functionality and usability.

    Just an update on this-

Bought 'rightclick' generic remote locking kit with two vag key blanks- £25
I'm no auto electrician so had my local guy fit control unit/wiring etc- £40
Had the vag blanks cut- £20
Swapped immobiliser chips over to new keys- some fiddling with tiny files and acetone.

so two new keys and remote locking fixed for £95, without any coding (wouldn't work anyhow),
maybe a good budget alternative for anyone else with remote locking that can't be sorted via recoding etc
