    Hi Guys,

I'm really hoping someone can offer me some help on this.....

i have a 1999 A4 1.8 with an auto box, it's at 113000 miles so not by any means a spring chicken!
A few months ago it began disengaging when in fourth and the engine would just rev away, if I took my foot off the gas then it would just idle and the car would be out of any gear.
This became worse but would only happen when car became warm, whilst cold it selected all gears, and so eventually I decided to drain the box and replace filter which I have done. It appeared slightly better initially but has now again begun to do the same thing, now today it wont change out of first gear! It just revs to max...

Can anybody shed any light on what the problem may be? I don't have spare cash to be throwing at the car so need to try and sort this myself if I can....

I live in Dorset, so if anyone can recommend a good independent or advise on what I could try myself it would be VERY much appreciated!

    Luke

Do you have the engine and gearbox code?

I would also recommend a fault code scan.

Should be on the data sticker in the spare wheel well.

Chris, thanks for replying. I have checked fault codes and all is clear since the last time I cleared them. The engine/trans codes are APT/DMU or that's how it appears on the sticker.

The last couple of times I've driven the car it has behaved itself and no slippage in fourth at all, but I know the problem will reoccur. It has also started screeching as tho the pump is cavitating although I have rechecked the fluid levels and confirmed ok.

The fact it's intermittent and when engaged in fourth there is no slippage makes me think its an electrical issue but I may be wrong
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

    Best Regards, Luke
