I'm just coming up to 500K in one of my cars and I cant believe how well it still drives. Still nippy, happy to cruise all day up to 100 (I travel abroad a fair bit), and given 80 plodding does 40-45mpg.....and still getting an easy 600 to the tank.....

Apart from a new turbo and alternator at about 450K, it's just been routine servicing all the way....

And hearing about all the DPF problems and poorer engine life on the C6 2.0TDI, plus some of the fuelling/pump issues (eventually) on the later 130 C5.......

I just cant find any reason to move on from this car........I've even experimented with a cheap tuning box on another AFN I have, and it's whacked up the power (which the till now bullet proof auto 4 speed seems more than happy with) and done what it said and slightly improved economy further.....

So is the AFN better than it's children?

Great post, 500k is more or less to the moon and back!, I've got
    A 2001 130 pd currently on 170+k, I doubt it'll make 500k but
250 is my goal, inevitable turbo/fuelling issues for me will
probably not cost more than buying another decent old car so
I'll be sticking with this one for as long as possible.

in answer though it sounds like you've got the most reliable mile muncher
    of the 1.9s though

AFN/AHU/AHH and AVG are very good engines, the AJM isn't ! The pd115 had loads of issues with porous/cracked heads and rarely goes over 250k without major overhaul ! The AFN and it's derivatives are bulletproof, by far the most reliable and economical engine VAG group came up with !
