HiI have spotted an Audi A8 W12 which has done 88,000 miles. Its a 54 plate and has 2 owners, FSH. Its £10,000. I need some advice on whether this is a good opportunity and what problems I might face?

80,000 is nothing to an Audi!

As long as the car has the detailed Audi History, is HPI clear and drives 100% you shouldn't have a problem.

I have seen W12's on ebay and audi themselves with far far far more miles.

Remember this is a specialist engine so keep it within Audi for its services.

You should be able to PM me as I'm a staff member ..

Looks good just remember its gonna hit your wallet when you're fuelling it and also servicing as to keep the car in top nick you're gonna need to keep it within Audi.

    Looks very nice!

Just check that there are no warning lights (sporadic or otherwise) as engine bay space will be very limited - ie anything that needs fixing will be expensive owing to the time needed to dismantle things to gain access. As an example, check the coolant temperature gauge functions normally (ie doesn't fail to move, or suddenly move about). I recall reading that a coolant temp sender is an engine out job to gain access which would probably be £3-4k.

I believe the 6.0 runs the same gearbox and transmission as the V8 TDIs - in which case watch out for harsh downshifts/clumsy shifts (which means fluid changes and software updates - circa £600) and listen carefully for any whining from the rear differential on deceleration (=rear carrier bearings and the diff is about £4k).

I'm guessing brakes will be pretty expensive (the V8 TDIs are circa £450 for the front so a 6.0 will be at least that) so check the front discs for wear.

I wrote a post on here a while ago about things to look for on V8 TDIs so some of that might be worth a quick read (obviously skip the engine or turbo related bits).

Might also be worth calling a couple of main dealers to see if they have higher mileage 6.0s that they see regularly and whether there are any things worth looking for.

Finally, depending on how risk averse you are, it might be worth getting a fault code scan done - that way you know if there is anything lurking that might not be immediately obvious.

Many thanks EG 4.0 TDI - any ideas what the cost of an extended warranty is?

Not sure for the 6.0 but a V8 tdi one is about 1500 per annum. However I have previously found that changing the excess has a surprisingly large impact on the premium - ie if you take, say, an excess of £250 it can more than half the premium over an excess of £50.

My experience is that most things that need fixing mean you rarely get out of the garage for less than £500 so a large excess starts to make more sense if the premium savings are big enough.

It's a good backup to have but just be warned that (in my experience at least) they can sometimes be a bit tricky on paying out larger claims!
