Hi! Does anyone know of a step-by-step guide on how to change engine oil for the diesel B8 for newbies? I hear that the oil filter is on the top of the engine for the B8 TFSI but am not sure if this is the case for the TDI (and how to change it...).

I'm really new to this but am pretty keen to do my own oil changes! I'm on Longlife Service and the MMI states that I do not need to change it until another 3000 miles but I've started becoming pretty suspicious of it - some people say that the car detects how dirty the oil is and your driving style and calculates when a change is due based on that? The oil looks pretty black however.

The oil filter for 143/170 TDI is on top, to the right, a third of the way don the engine once you have pulled the plastic engine cover off... you need a socket that will unscrew it from the top and the filter top, seal and filter will come away in one part. When replacing the filter, be very very careful with the seal, its easy to damage..

I did an oil change on my 143 Tdi a couple of months ago. The filter is accessible from above, but you will need to remove the undertray
to drain the old oil unless you use a pump to extract it. I had to buy a filter cap removal tool as the size of the filter housing is different from that on my B6 1.9Tdi. I think I bought the removal tool from the local Skoda dealer. It was quite cheap. I shall post details and pictures tomorrow. The whole job is simple and the most difficult part for me was getting the car up on ramps to remove the undertray as mine is an S line and so rather low! I used Quantum oil from Audi.

I was mistaken in recalling that the filter cap removal tool was obtained from Skoda. I bought the 32mm socket which is required, from Halfords. I attach a picture. I seem to recall that there might not be clearance for a deeper socket.
I hope at you find the job easy.

You'll have to just pull the engine cover off and measure from flat to flat across the filter cover
"nut", or ask Audi who will know.

    thanks.
i pulled the engine cover off and on thge right hand side i could see the top of the black plastic oil filter housing cover. It has a hexagonal shape where the socket/tool to remove it is-it measures 30 or 31mm from flat to flat.
there is also what looks like a dipstick tube but with a sealed cap at the top of it.This is situated a little infront of the oilfilter housing.
Is this a dipstick or does one have to buy one from audi?.
i suppose once the cover/cap of the tube comes off,one could use a vacuum operated oil suction tool which i have sucessfully used on my vw bora, bmw 3 and s 5 series cars to suck out the old oil.
Is the dipstick cover replaceable or would one have to buy a new cap/cover for the tube once you remove it to suck out the old oil.?

The 'dipstick tube with sealed cap' object that you found, is exactly that.

The workshop use an adjustable calibrated measuring rod as their dipstick; although an equivalent 'normal' dipstick has been found - just search the forum.

The dipstick cover is re-useable and is just pushed back on to the tube.

    thanks

so how does one get this sealed cap off-is it a pull out action or turn anticlockwise and pull out?

just asking as do not want to break something.
