Hi, Im at the end of my tether, if any one can help I would appreciate it.

Got a 2006 (pre dpf) Golf 2.0 GT TDi 170 DSG with BMN engine code, that has a cold starting issue. It does always start eventually, and once it has started, it will start first time every time for the rest of the day. Only when the car has been left overnight will it do it again. It turns over several times, and then eventually fires and stutters into life, stuttering for the first 5 seconds or so. Originally we had a glowplug code coming up. This has been going on for a year now, and I just want it sorted.

To date, we have done the following work

    - 4 new glow plugs
    - new starter motor
    - new injector seals
    - new in tank fuel pump
    - new high pressure fuel pump
    - new fuel filter
    - new battery
    - fuel additive

Originally we thought it was fuel system related, so we changed the starter motor and battery as these often cause a problem on mk5's.

Once the glowplugs were changed, the problem went away for 2-3 days, then started doing it again, EML came on, read codes - glowplug no.1. Changed glowplug, all was fine, then it came back again.

It appears to be glowplug related, but I dont know how to fix

    Please help!

    Thanks in advance.

You replaced a lot of parts without a VCDS scan! it sounds like a coolant temperature sensor, scan with VCDS! http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/dtc-comparison.html

Injector seals? Has the car not had the injector recall carried out? Is the engine losing coolant?

sorry, I forgot about the Coolant Temp sensor - thats another item that was changed - for a genuine one

I have scanned it with VCDS, I havent got the code to hand, but it is glowplug no.1.

The car has had 4 new injectors by Volkswagen.

I have changed the glow plugs twice in the space of year now, Both times Ive used Beru ones from Euro's which I now hear are not up to the job by looking through the forums. What I cant seem to understand is why number 2 keeps failing. Could it be the wiring or a relay, or something else? Definately the starting fault only happens when the outside temperature falls under 5-6 degrees, so Im pretty sure it must be down the the glowplugs, as I am of the understanding that glowplugs on these cars are only required when the temperature is under 7 degrees.

I'm going to fit 4 new genuine VW glowplugs (unless anyone can recommend even better ones), but I need to check if theres anything else that needs checking at the same time.

Sorry Crasher I didnt answer your question, - I changed the injector seals as a VW 'Specialist' claimed that it was the fault - which it wasnt, this was nearly a year ago and was one of the 1st things I did. Also, the car doesnt use a drop of coolant, so no pourous head, head gasket problems, etc etc.

There is a technical solution for VW dealers regarding the glowplug control module so it may be worth letting a VW dealer look at that.

I'd also look at the wiring, it's probably the part of the loom that comes away from under the battery. I had this on my Mk1 Leon Cupra TDI. Once it was changed the problem was cured.

No it is part of the injector harness on the 2 litre 16v, nothing like your MK1 Leon.
