    Happy new year to all.

I decided to fit my new rocker cover seals only to find a nasty looking crack on the off side cylinder head.

The crack is situated near the end of the inlet cam on cylinder 1,3,5, just were the half moon shaped bearing sits towards were the bearing end cap is fitted, cam pulley is situated at this end.

Hows it happened? I no idea! gutted as I have only fitted new cams and lifters ect back in June.

I haven't lost compression or any coolant/oil contamination, and the car runs no different, crack is at worst 1/2 mil wide and a good inch deep.

Sooooo, I have just bought a good second hand set of cylinder heads from a 2000 AFB, the new problem.....which cylinder head gasket to buy??? three to choose from! looking on the vagcats board.

    Car: 2.5 tdi v6 1998 afb.

That's an odd one ! Just get the same thickness as the one you remove...I would have done both at the same time and lapped the valves in...peace of mind !

I was lucky enough to come across a pair from a 95,000 miler, so bought them, in very nice clean condition, complete with valves fitted. I have pressed the valves and they all move freely and are strait, I was hoping to buy the gaskets before I start the work, why is there 3 types?

I will post a picture when I undertake the work adamss24, I have never seen anything like it.
