Thinking of buying a VW GOLF Mark VI 1.4 TSI

    I know they come in 122, 140, 160 and 170 BHP

But im looking at buying the 122 BHP version from 2009 onwards................with DSG
I think this particular one has the 7 speed DSG with a pair of dry friction clutches

Anyone have any comments on this 122 BHP car in regards to power, reliability, MPG and just the general drive

Also, any specific comments on this 7 speed DSG ?

Ive seen alot of stuff about issues with these DSG boxes > mechatronic units, failure of the boxes and some people say not to even buy them outside of warranty as if something goes wrong, its going to cost you......lots

When I was looking to buy I thought there were only two 1.4 petrol versions, a 122ps and a 160ps, both returned very similar mpg figures according to the brochure.

As for the DSG box I also had read about the many failures. Although like you I preferred DSG the risk of failure and repair costs were sufficiently high enough for me to opt for a manual in the end.

    Thanks for reply Chaser.
These DSG boxes seem to be troublesome alright and the last thing i want to do is buy a DSG and spend my time fixing it

I am fan of the DSG boxes...havent done much research into reliability, some extended warranty should easily cover these sort of failures

Javsta, do you own a DSG box ?
If so, for how long, what kind and any issues with it so far ?

Hi and welcome to the Forums Padrag , I've been running a 122 BHP Tsi mated to a 7 speed DSG box for over 2 years.....I absolutely love the DSG box....it's exceptionally quick witted in comparison to regular torque convertor autos and the fuel consumption is excellent.

I've only covered 9,000 miles (mostly City driving)....haven't had any issues what so ever bar I get a slight vibration upshifting from 1st to 2nd......there is a software fix but I purposely avoided the free update because the update means that the upshift happens higher up the rev range.

Depending on your driving style....you should get in excess of 30 mpg through Dublin traffic (is it still horrendous ?) and circa 50 mpg on long runs.

Beware though ! if you give it wellie the mpg figures plummet.

Like already mentioned, an extended warranty should give you peace of mind.

    Any direct questions ?....just shout.

My previous car (Mk 5) was DSG with 122 engine and I loved the way it went and had no trouble with it. However at 30K it did not feel as smooth as when new and a few quirks in changes and moving away on hills made me upgrade to manual . I just did not trust it to own out of guarantee.

    Thanks for that
I think that link you have only applies to the 6 speed DSG boxes..............which are "wet" and have a recommended service interval every 40,000 miles

However, when it comes to the 7 speed DSG boxes, these are dry and there is no recommended service interval as they are "sealed for life " supposedly

    open to correction : )

Mine was a 7 speed dry box one of the last old stock bought when the MK6 had just come out. However I think that although the CLUTCHES are now dry the gearbox itself requires oil service at 40 K intervals
