    I have the old orange version of this, it won't code, adapt or do anything fancy. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/170907206581?...#ht_1171wt_932

    For a few quid extra you could have VCDS lite which would be better for your car

    I have one of these CAR FAULT CODE READER ENGINE SCANNER DIAGNOSTIC RESET TOOL OBD 2 CAN BUS EOBD | eBay and it works great and very easy to use, it scans for codes tells you what the code means and you can also clear codes with it very handy little tool and saves getting the laptop out just to read a code, I also have VCDS lite and have had very little need to use it so far.

    i purchased this one
    D900 Universal Any Car OBD2 EOBD Fault Code Reader Scanner Diagnostic Scan Tool | eBay

    and it works great, also does the Live data scan as well, it has a lot of manufacturers as well, it didnt show a vauxhall(my brother has an astra) and he had a few error, i just selected OTHER in the manufacturer and cleared his codes......BUT it does not do the air bag etc.

    It does not say it works with VAG cars, have you used it on a Passat?

    I've got a 2002 1.8T. I bought this unit last year. Works spot on. I've read several codes with mine and it clears them as long as the problem has been rectified. Try the link;
